Rick Santorum Does About-Face on Gay Issues, while mulling 2012
Conservatism and anti-gay sentiment has often, although not always , gone together:
- Huckabee says gay marriage "outside the ideal"
- Some conservatives want AIDS patients isolated
- Tea Party and anti-gay slogan Tees
David Badash of The New Civil Rights Movement ponders Rick Santorum's about face: Rick Santorum, Mulling 2012, Warms To Gay Marriage?
In the past, former Senator Rick Santorum held very strongly oppositional views to gay marriage and to gay issues in general. He boldly stated that the bond between one man and woman was the building block of every social institution, and that gay marriage would mean society's rapid decline.
He became infamous for stating that it was "one man, one woman" and not "one man, one child or one dog".
Badash is now a bit taken aback, and with good reason, by the "new" Santorum:
Rick Santorum now:
“I have no problem from a public policy point of view with homosexuality.”
Whoa! Stop the presses! Did Rick Santorum just come out in support of homosexuality and gay marriage?
Well, to quote fellow wildcat conservative John Boehner, “Hell no!”
Santorum suffered massive defeat in Senate bid
Santorum lost his 2006 U.S. Senate election by 59% to 41%, which according to Badash, was the largest margin of defeat for an incumbent senator since 1980. Has he been "scared gay"?
He had always modeled himself as an extremely right-wing politician. Heavy praise and heavy criticism rained down on him due to his public statements and voting record on gays, gay marriage, and gay rights, intelligent design, Hurricane Katrina, the Catholic Church’s pedophile priest problem, among other of his various and sundry cultural and social platforms. The author of “It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good,” Santorum was deliberately chiding Hilary Clinton's "It takes a village".
So why is he now changing? Could it be an attempt to strengthen himself politically, by jumping on Tea Party government and fiscal platforms?
He now “sees an opening for someone who can unite the various primary factions — economic libertarians, party establishment types and cultural conservatives,” according to CBS News Chief Political Consultant Marc Ambinder.
An issue of national security
In the US Senate, Santorum called the banning of gay marriage ‘the ultimate homeland security issue,’ believing that the existence of gay couples / families represented a threat to national security, as CBS once said.
Badash wonders if has Santorum warmed to gay marriage and the LGBTQ community, or is this just a sharp political move. He concludes it must be either : a. Santorum's former anti-gay stance was a lie, for political expediency or that b. His new friendliness toward gays is a lie, for political expediency. Either way, Badash says, it is not a pretty picture.
Just last year, in his defense of DOMA, Santorum had contacted the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) in Washington, DC, ranting about the out of control Supreme Court which pushed gay marriage on the state of Iowa, and said it was a life or death struggle to keep the sacred union of "one man, one woman".

I am the Nassau County Executive Committe Chairman to the Constitution Party, and 4th Degree Brother in the lay fraternity, the Knights of Columbus in the Holy Catholic Church, and I applaud the good Senator's back-tracking on homophobia and public policy. One of my Catholic high school teachers, US Army Veteran and Marianist Brother Lawrence Syriac was homosexual, and one of my guitar playing school chums Douglas Malone, now in San Francisco,CA was gay, and I was horribly nicknamed,"Doug's Fudge", because I was not a practicing heterosexual, but a celibate Catholic man. The slander against me was never prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and I am still a celibate Christian today. I hope and pray that readers will help me defend civil rights of "straights", "gays" and bi's, single and married and divorced or separated here in 4th Federal district NY State, and help me protect the rigths of the unborn, the legal immigrants, and stop the "War without End"mentality of the 2 major parties in the United States of America, and help me declare a peace dividend which would provide relief for Americans, and help the fight against terrorism and substance abuse abroad. Respectfully Yours, Dan Tobin, 115 Atlantic Ave Apt 2A,Hempstead, NY 11550-1204: Please blog for me, and share my offer of public service with family, friends, and co-workers, and make contributions payable to: Dan Tobin for Congress, 115 Atlantic Ave Apt 2A, Hempstead,NY 11550-1204

Santorum is a total prick, he should never work for the public again.

" I applaud the good Senator's back-tracking on homophobia and public policy"
Whoa. First, I don't think that the Senator is any good at all. He is supposed to be representing equlaity, freedom, and liberty afforded by the Consitution that he represents. Yes, he can admit to a mistake, but his mistake and damage has already been made. He is unfit for office.
I say the same thing about Senator Byrd, a Democrat and former KKK member.
Make too big a mistake and you are no longer fit to serve as there are many others better able and suited.

Susan: This is really an excellent story and its excellence should come as no surprise, because all of your stories are truly first rate.
But as we approach the 2010 elections, this story raises many questions and perhaps provides a glimpse to where many dyed-in-the-wool conservatives are focusing in terms of grappling with and transcending their ideology. For example: Did Santorum have an epiphany, a bout with his conscience, or is Santorum merely guilty of cynical political pandering?

The latter.

Susan Marie: It's really a good story and I'm by no means trying to butter you up. But I've never complimented you before, as have others, re your NP stories. I just felt that I had to clear the air here, admit that I was remiss in complimenting you, and make up for lost time. :)

I was talking to Yankee Jim--not you! Sorry for the misunderstanding . . . . :)
