Malibu officials have warned celebrities that they may not leave their homes this weekend unless by helicopter because the 101 will be choked with I-405ers trying to find a way around town.

The 405 Freeway does not pass through Malibu, but residents could feel the pain during the closure when a 10-mile stretch closes for 53 hours. Local sheriff's and fire officials are preparing for the worst-case scenarios of an event that has been dubbed Carmageddon.

"Our biggest concern is folks on the 101 [Freeway] jumping over to Malibu on the canyon roads," said Sgt. Eric T. Fox of the Malibu/Lost Hill's Sheriff's Station at a Public Safety Commission meeting.

Fox said the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will be manning all the major intersections on PCH to make sure they are not blocked by traffic.

"There will be a large amount of deputy presence on PCH and the whole department will be on tactical alert that weekend,” Fox said.

The northbound lanes of the 405 will be shut down from the 10 Freeway to the 101. The southbound closure will stretch from the 101 to Getty Center Drive. The lanes will begin shutting down at 10 p.m. on July 15, which is a Friday, to ensure full closure by midnight. The closure will continue until 5 a.m. the following Monday.

The city of Los Angeles announced on Friday that the southbound PCH lane in Pacific Palisades closed for a sewer project will open during the 405 closure.”
