Robert Christopher Metsos: 11th 'Russian Spy' Arrested in Cyprus
Canadian Robert Christopher Metsos Arrested in Cyprus
Robert Christopher Metsos is the 11th person arrested in relation to an alleged Russian spy ring. The Canadian citizen was detained at Larnaca airport while on the way to Budapest.
None of the so-called Russian spies had any consular or diplomatic ties. For example, Anna Chapman ran an online real estate business. So far, ten people have already been charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government, which carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.

"Based on the (Interpol) red notice we received, he is wanted for money laundering and espionage," police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told Reuters, regarding why he was arrested.
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has denounced the spy-ring allegations as nonsense, denying any Russian government involvement. He alleged that the whole story was cooked up on the US side to undermine American-Russian relations, which are just starting to improve. Also, Medvedev's own political enemies would welcome the scandal.
"They have not explained anything to us. I hope they will do so. The moment when all this was done was chosen quite smartly," Lavrov observed, with his trademark sarcasm.
One piece of evidence leveled against the accused spies is a decoded instruction document, which sounds a little too on-the-nose: it's like hiring someone to work at McDonalds and handing them a slip of paper that says "make burgers".
''You were sent to USA for long-term service trip,'' says one decoded message to two of the suspects that was intercepted by US intelligence. ''Your education, bank accounts, car, house, etc - all these serve one goal: fulfil your main mission … to search and develop ties in policymaking circles in US and send intels [intelligence reports].''
