Weisenheimer Krauthammer makes little sense in “The last refuge of a liberal.”  Here’s what I mean:

“Liberalism” is not really the subject, much less “under siege.” That is a statement Charles makes to distract. The subject is this government under President Obama without the labels. It is what it is, and I don’t think a single label is fitting.

In America under our Constitution, government has a high purpose and that is to ensure equal respect for all points of view. When Obama spoke about small town people clinging to guns and religion, I have made that same remark. I came from one of those small towns and people have lived there all of their lives never having ventured outside the county.

They go to church and they hunt. They would have breakfast at Denny’s but the town isn’t big enough to warrant a franchise. They are like tribesmen in Afghanistan who protect their lifestyle fiercely as they are fearful of change and improvement. What else so they know?

Well, they might know Glenn Beck, but most don’t have cable. They vote for Congressman Boehner.

I think guns in the city are a bad idea, but would I take guns from people who actually hunt? I would not. Not all circumstances are equal are they?

Are these the smartest folks in the country? On the average, they are probably below it because, for one thing, they don’t know diversity.

The job of the President, Congress, and government is to provide services as defined by law and to provide for our common defense. I might add, at the lowest cost possible or at the highest return on cost.

That is a complex idea that my country folk would not understand. What they do understand is that illegals are in this country violating the law and they want the laws enforced without any more delay.

They want the government to help the private sector create jobs because they all understand they don’t need more mail carriers.

I think Charles has one central point that I almost missed with all of the phobia talk that is Democrats have their hands on the governance stick and they are not performing as well as nearly everyone expected. The President has taken too many vacations and his cabinet performance has been lousy too. I hope Obama returns reinvigorated so we can talk about the real business of governing America instead of all of these side shows and circus acts.

Liberalism under siege is an ugly sight indeed. Just yesterday it was all hope and change and returning power to the people. But the people have proved so disappointing. Their recalcitrance has, in only 19 months, turned the predicted 40-year liberal ascendancy (James Carville) into a full retreat. Ah, the people, the little people, the small-town people, the "bitter" people, as Barack Obama in an unguarded moment once memorably called them, clinging "to guns or religion or" -- this part is less remembered -- "antipathy toward people who aren't like them."

That's a polite way of saying: clinging to bigotry. And promiscuous charges of bigotry are precisely how our current rulers and their vast media auxiliary react to an obstreperous citizenry that insists on incorrect thinking.

-- Resistance to the vast expansion of government power, intrusiveness and debt, as represented by the Tea Party movement? Why, racist resentment toward a black president.

-- Disgust and alarm with the federal government's unwillingness to curb illegal immigration, as crystallized in the Arizona law? Nativism.

-- Opposition to the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history, as expressed in Proposition 8 in California? Homophobia.

-- Opposition to a 15-story Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero? Islamophobia.

Now we know why the country has become "ungovernable," last year's excuse for the Democrats' failure of governance: Who can possibly govern a nation of racist, nativist, homophobic Islamophobes?”
