Roland W. Burris had ambitions of becoming a lawyer and winning statewide elective office in Illinois. He reached both goals, but first he served as the OCC’s first African American bank examiner. He has just been appointed as the next Senator of Illinois to replace Senator Barrack Obama.  Governor Blagojevich knew Roland Burris back in 2002 when it was unclear whether Blagojevich could withstand the competition that Burris was making for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.  Today, December 30, 2008 Governor Blagojevich has decided to make him a Senator rather than having Burris continue in the next competition for Governor. “I am accepting an appointment from the Governor and I will uphold the integrity of this office,” said Burris.  Burris has told the media on Fox News that he “has no comment on Governor’s situation.” Burris stayed at the OCC only about a year before joining the business of banking. He later served as Illinois state comptroller (1979-1991) and Illinois attorney general (1991-1995). He also ran unsuccessfully for governor.
