Media since it was established it was always known as a tool of promoting democracy and exposing the wrongs that may be happening within government bodies. Most people agree that media is a very powerful tool in sense of promoting a healthy democratic rights of nations. Others people praise media saying without is people would not be advanced like the way they are now, media supply people with news, education, entertainment, analysis and it also inform the society, it is a part of society that should never be ignored.
In <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />South Africa on the 23-24 July the Independent Electoral commission of the country hosted a two days media summit whereby the main issue was to discuss the vital role of media in promotion of healthy democratic elections. It was said that media should always try to be as objective as possible when coming to the issues of elections. According to Professor Tinyiko Maluleke from UNISA South African media plays a major role in promoting democracy.
When arguing about the issue of media in being unable to promote democracy in other countries like Zimbabwe and others media are being used by those in power to bring forward their dirty works and covering things that was supposed to be brought forward. In those countries independent media houses are being proscribed. In such countries media is not being used as a promotion tool for democracy but a tool used for propaganda by the people in power. The independency of the media should always be considered, media should be free from being manipulated.
The commissioner of IEC in Limpopo South Africa Mrs. Nkaro Mateta praised south Africa for having a very good relationship between media and political parties including the government. “Media should be able to share thoughts with government and political parties” said Mrs. Mateta.
