Roy McDonald on Gay Marriage: 'I'm Trying to Do the Right Thing'
'Fuck It': Republican Roy McDonald Crosses Party Line to Support Gay Marriage
A vote on New York's same-sex marriage bill is looming. While religious groups do their best to derail what is ultimately a civil-rights issue, Republican Senator Roy J. McDonald made a career-defining move and headline-stealing statement:
"You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn't black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing. You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, fuck it, I don't care what you think. I'm trying to do the right thing."
It looks like Roy McDonald's statements were well-received by his constituents, if his Facebook page is any indication: admonishments are vastly outweighed by praise. Will other representatives still on the fence about the issue take a cue from this? Time will tell: according to the NY Daily News link above, several other Republican senators are open to supporting the same-sex marriage bill.
