Mock the Week - Newsreel - Prince Charles

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will start a 12 day tour of Canada today. This will be Camilla's first visit this country.

Their itinerary has them visiting 12 cities and communities in Newfoundland, Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.

The visit will be kicked off today with a visit to St. John's Newfoundland.  They are scheduled to arrive at 4:30 pm EST.

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla begin an 11-day royal tour of Canada on Monday.

The visit, their first as a married couple, includes stops in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec. They are scheduled to visit 12 cities and communities from Nov. 2 to Nov. 12.

The royal couple's tour of the country comes at a time when a recent survey obtained last week by CBC News indicated that a majority of Canadians felt the constitutional monarchy is out of step with the times, and that only one-quarter agreed Prince Charles was ahead of the times.

The couple will begin the royal tour in Newfoundland on Monday afternoon, and they will be greeted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Gov. Gen. Michaƫlle Jean and Premier Danny Williams in St. John's.

The bill for this, including security is high.  I think this one is being paid for by Canada.  There has been a lot of discussion on the Royal family here in the last week or so.  Not much of it was positive, however I agree with a211 that there is an attraction whenever they visit.

Is this a goodwill tour?  Does it state the purpose of their visit?

It's always a big deal when they visit the U.S.  Royalty, no matter your point of view, generate interest and curiosity.  There are not many monarchs left in the world, and seeing a queen, king, or prince/princess carries with it some awe and nostalgia.

a211423 it is touted as a tour where Prince Charles shows his wife the country he so loves.

I was involved with the visit of Prince Charles and Diana to Victoria, BC, I believe it was 1985.  It is always a big attraction.  The Royal family is very popular in Victoria.

It will be interesting to see if Canadians still care about Royals coming over, especially now that Prince Charles has a new wife.

I think it will probably be a big deal, since we have a culture of celebrity worship.

This is interesting, a bit of Canadian history:

Tuesday, they will visit Canada's oldest English settlement in Cupids, which is celebrating its 400th anniversary next year, and Brigus, home of famed Arctic explorer Captain Robert Bartlett, before heading across Canada.

But the highlight of the trip for Camilla is expected to be a tour of Dundurn Castle in Hamilton, Ontario, built in 1835 for her great-great-great-grand-father and former prime minister of the united Province of Canada, Sir Alan MacNab.

"For my wife, it is both figuratively and literally true that Canada is in her blood since she has the good fortune to be a great, great, great granddaughter of the prime minister of the united Province of Canada, Sir Alan MacNab who lived in Hamilton, Ontario," said Prince Charles.

"We are both eagerly looking forward to discovering those family roots and of seeing her forbears' home in a few day's time."
