Mock the Week - Newsreel - Prince Charles

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will start a 12 day tour of Canada today. This will be Camilla's first visit this country.

Their itinerary has them visiting 12 cities and communities in Newfoundland, Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.

The visit will be kicked off today with a visit to St. John's Newfoundland.  They are scheduled to arrive at 4:30 pm EST.

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla begin an 11-day royal tour of Canada on Monday.

The visit, their first as a married couple, includes stops in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec. They are scheduled to visit 12 cities and communities from Nov. 2 to Nov. 12.

The royal couple's tour of the country comes at a time when a recent survey obtained last week by CBC News indicated that a majority of Canadians felt the constitutional monarchy is out of step with the times, and that only one-quarter agreed Prince Charles was ahead of the times.

The couple will begin the royal tour in Newfoundland on Monday afternoon, and they will be greeted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Gov. Gen. Michaƫlle Jean and Premier Danny Williams in St. John's.

The bill for this, including security is high.  I think this one is being paid for by Canada.  There has been a lot of discussion on the Royal family here in the last week or so.  Not much of it was positive, however I agree with a211 that there is an attraction whenever they visit.

Is this a goodwill tour?  Does it state the purpose of their visit?

It's always a big deal when they visit the U.S.  Royalty, no matter your point of view, generate interest and curiosity.  There are not many monarchs left in the world, and seeing a queen, king, or prince/princess carries with it some awe and nostalgia.

a211423 it is touted as a tour where Prince Charles shows his wife the country he so loves.

I was involved with the visit of Prince Charles and Diana to Victoria, BC, I believe it was 1985.  It is always a big attraction.  The Royal family is very popular in Victoria.

It will be interesting to see if Canadians still care about Royals coming over, especially now that Prince Charles has a new wife.

I think it will probably be a big deal, since we have a culture of celebrity worship.

Is he still sleeping with her?  According to the headliners at the checkout..LOL!  No, I do not buy them.

I feel sorry for Charles for the poor man was never loved.  His Mother never hardly touched him.  Nannies did.  That is why he wants an older , uglier woman..it is familiar.

I feel sorry for her too tho.  When the limelight is off they have to take off their clothes and still do what the rest of us do.  It is very hard for this kind of elite to ever have solitude.  The schedule is consistent.  I worked within a family of this "lifestyle".  Walking amongst the art, the gardens and on a million dollar carpet was nice.

It makes the scripture very understandable about the rich man.

QueensHart, he's no spring chicken either, yanno!  She's only 16 months older, that's not a heck of a lot.  According to a recent Canadian poll, Charles has an "image problem."  No big shocker that.

I don't feel sorry for either of them, they made their bed, now they can "lay" in it.

Too bad the line can't skip him and go to William ...

There is a huge admiration for Canadians by us Brits, a historical kinship, and the tour is being aired on BBC and most live news stations in the UK. I am disheartened to read inaccurate views of Charles' childhood and remote mother. Its well known that whilst HM the Queen was preparing Charles for the throne, she was very intimate with him.  The subsequent films, myths and tragic relationship fuel the media drivel that people read as historic but is often myth and rumour but reported as fact.  I am not sure what type of reception they will receive in Quebec but i am heartened by the interest and happiness about the visit.  Cost, well it will probably be a few tax cents spread across the whole population or perhaps a few pence of ours.....not alot to keep a kinship afloat in my opinion and not alot to promote Maple Syrup exports and all things Canadian to us Brits who love the tourist adventure of Canada.....

Thank you very much for  your comments.  Tradition does indeed give us a shared history.

The sycophants will be out in droves to gape at those two.

If they bow down, you can label them as sycophants, otherwise they will fall in the "fan" or "gawker" category, eh?

I knew there was a difference between the Queen's English and American English:)

This is interesting, a bit of Canadian history:

Tuesday, they will visit Canada's oldest English settlement in Cupids, which is celebrating its 400th anniversary next year, and Brigus, home of famed Arctic explorer Captain Robert Bartlett, before heading across Canada.

But the highlight of the trip for Camilla is expected to be a tour of Dundurn Castle in Hamilton, Ontario, built in 1835 for her great-great-great-grand-father and former prime minister of the united Province of Canada, Sir Alan MacNab.

"For my wife, it is both figuratively and literally true that Canada is in her blood since she has the good fortune to be a great, great, great granddaughter of the prime minister of the united Province of Canada, Sir Alan MacNab who lived in Hamilton, Ontario," said Prince Charles.

"We are both eagerly looking forward to discovering those family roots and of seeing her forbears' home in a few day's time."
