Rumsfeld let Bin Laden escape
A US Senate report acuses Donald Rumsfield of letting Osama Bin Laden escape when he was within the grasp of US forces. It's reported that Bin laden was holed up and trapped in the Tora Bora caves and he himself expected to die. The full report will be issued on Monday.
The report, set for release Monday, is intended to help learn the lessons of the past as President Barack Obama prepares to announce a major escalation of the conflict, now in its ninth year, with up to 35,000 more US troops.
It points the finger directly at Rumsfeld for turning down requests for reinforcements as Bin Laden was trapped in caves and tunnels in a mountainous section of eastern Afghanistan known as Tora Bora.

I don't think it was a mistake, the war was against the Taliban and to take over Afghanistan changing its regime. Killing Bin Laden would have taken away the excuse for being in Afghanistan at that point the war on Bin Laden would have been over and there would have been no need for UN and the USA to occupy Afghanistan any longer.
Afghanistan is in a key position between Russia, Pakistan, Iran and China, concerning piping oil and gas to China. Russia wants to supply China and so did Iraq. Changing the regime was seen as the best plan to control oil and gas being supplied to China.
