Russia Claims US Backed Georgia to Help McCain's Campaign

Update 3:30pm EST - Putin, in an interview with CNN, said that the United States is behind Georgia's push into South Ossetia and the resulting conflict.

Putin stated that the push was designed to help presidential candidate John McCain (who coincidentally is doing slightly better in the polls after denouncing Russia's attack).

In an exclusive interview with CNN's Matthew Chance in the Black Sea city of Sochi Thursday, Putin said the U.S. had encouraged Georgia to attack the autonomous region of South Ossetia.

Putin told CNN his defense officials had told him it was done to benefit a presidential candidate -- Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are competing to succeed George W. Bush -- although he presented no evidence to back it up.

"U.S. citizens were indeed in the area in conflict," Putin said. "They were acting in implementing those orders doing as they were ordered, and the only one who can give such orders is their leader."

Word came out from Moscow today that any military aid to Georgia from other countries would be seen as an 'act of war'. While this might curtail American and other troops from potentially joining in what has become an unsteady stalemate, it brings questions about troops who might already be operating in Georgia.

In other related news, Russia gained the backing from China and Central Asian states, adding more tension to the situation. While the West has been vocal in decrying Russia's actions in South Ossetia and the EU weighs sanctions against Russia, China, Kazakhstan and others voiced support for Russia's actions in Georgia.

French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner said today that the EU is considering sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Georgia.
RUSSIA today won support from China and Central Asian states in its standoff with the West over the Georgia conflict as the European Union said it was weighing sanctions against Moscow.

Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev said he hoped the "united position'' of a summit of Central Asian nations would ``serve as a serious signal to those who try to turn black into white.''

The West has strongly condemned Russia's military offensive in Georgia this month and Medvedev's decision to recognise the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.

Moscow has issued an extraordinary warning to the West that military assistance to Georgia for use against South Ossetia or Abkhazia would be viewed as a "declaration of war" by Russia.

The extreme rhetoric from the Kremlin's envoy to NATO came as President Dmitry Medvedev stressed he will make a military response to US missile defence installations in eastern Europe, sending new shudders across countries whose people were once blighted by the Iron Curtain.

That's about as silly an excuse for the Russians as I've ever heard. They must think we're stupid, and they must want Obama elected, too.

U.S. response ...."False and not rational".

Is that not a description of our foreign policy?

Maybe Vlad the Impaler had something there.

I think the Russian rhetoric machine is still working off a nearly two decade long bender..... give em' a break if they are a little rusty at the game.

Putin only needs to present the Truth with Proof.  It is likely that US intelligence offices were on the ground in Georgia, and so was Russia's.  Anyone who doesn't understand the role of intelligence, then they obviousely don't understanding the job description of intelligence!  It is fact, the Israeli forces have been hired and training Georgia's defence forces, as this falls within the rights of any soverign state.

So what's "Bad Vlad" Putin's point?

We may find out the truth in a decade or two, once it is to late.
