Reading the signs and noises coming from Pakistan, a Russian defense expert today said that in the event of disintegration of Pakistan due to the internal conflict, the nuclear arsenal of the Islamic country poses a very serious threat to the neighboring countries. This is said by Alexei Arbatov, Chairman of Non-Proliferation Programmed of Cernegie Moscow Center in a seminar.

He reiterated that Russia would support whatever may be done to stabilize Pakistan, but needs to have some precautionary mechanism in place to take away the Pakistani nuclear weapons, if the country disintegrates.

Describing Pakistan as the "principal" nuclear threat to Russia, an eminent foreign policy and security expert has claimed that Moscow would support any US endeavour to take away Islamabad's atomic weapons in case of any destabilisation in the Islamic nation.

"Russian authorities for many years have been indicating that Pakistan was a much more serious problem, both for nuclear proliferation and for nuclear terrorism, than Iran," Alexei Arbatov, Chairman of the Non-Proliferation Programme of Carnegie Moscow Centre, said at a recent seminar here.

"Russia has been living already for more than a decade within reach of Pakistani nuclear missiles and without any means to defend against them. So Russia considered and considers Pakistan to be the principal threat from the point of view of nuclear proliferation," he said.

I wonder what is the criterion for becoming a nuclear power country.  Was there a cut-off day for getting the bomb, and everyone who tries after a certain date is prohibited, or what?  None of the countries with the A-bomb can necessarily be trusted not to use it more than another, in my opinion.  Seems they are all pretty power-hungry and have a general disregard for the sanctity of human life.

it's definitely true that if the islamic extremists get their control over pakistan, which is happening slowly but surely, india and other neighbors should be scared of nuclear war.

hopefully this doesn't happen and pakistan cracks down on the extremism, but they need to start before it's too late.

You are welcome, Cypresso. Thanks for recommendation.

I think it is better late than never. The world will get time till Baitullah Mehsud presses the button.

After that only cosmic dust remains...!

Meshud..? honestly I don't know who is mentoring him.. why American drones purposefully avoid his bases where he is known to be residing and even when he is giving live interviews to the media.

I think he would pave the way for the Americans to take over the nuclear installations and stand back for further orders. next stop Tehran?
