Russia sends 6th space tourist into space at an increased fee of $30 million

Space travel just got more expensive. While American businessman Dennis Tito had to pay a whopping US$20 million to go down in history as the first space tourist in 2001, the most recent space tourist Richard Garriott, had to pay an even more convincing US$30 million for the same 10-day space trip. Garriott, now the 6th privately funded space tourist, is an American video game designer and son of NASA astronaut, Owen K. Garriott. The Soyuz spacecraft carrying Garriott and two professional astronauts blasted off from Baikonur airbase in Kazakhstan yesterday. Garriott will be coming back home on October 23rd.
Although space tourist flights are fully booked until 2009, recent hike in flying fee might impact the demand, freeing up some spots. As of now, the list of possible future commercial space tourists includes Vladimir Gruzdev and Sergey Brin. Gruzdev is a United Russia party member whose $25 million flight may be sponsored from the party’s funds! And, Sergey Brin is a famous entrepreneur and co-founder of Google, who is expected to fly in 2011. I am sure Brin will make the most out of the money he will invest in his space trip. Expect Google Space applications in the nearest future.
Mr Garriott reportedly paid $30 million (£18 million) to become the sixth paying space traveler and the first American to follow a parent into orbit.
But he expects to recoup some of the costs of the 10-day mission through money raised from sponsors of his experiments.
On the mission, he plans to perform several experiments on topics including the effect of space travel on the immune system and sleep patterns of astronauts. He also plans to photograph Earth to measure changes since his father, Owen, snapped pictures from the US station Skylab, where he spent 60 days in 1973.
Mr Garriott, who made his fortune designing computer fantasy games, dreamed of space as a child and was bitterly disappointed to learn that he could never become a Nasa astronaut - like his father and many of their neighbours - because of his poor eyesight.
