A news announcement released today tally 35 dead and over 130 injured in an explosion that took place Monday at the Russian International Airport Domodedovo, according to RIA Novosti. President Medvedev twittered out that he is mourning the loss of those dead. He also vowed to impose harsh punishment on those responsible when found. According to police officials there are still three suspects at large. This is the deadliest explosion since last March when an underground railway was struck during rush hour. The suicide bomb attacker stood in the midst of many travelers walking to and from their destinations when he released the devastating blast. The bomb that detonated seemed to have the equivalent of 5 kg of TNT (dynamite) according to reporters from Bucharest, Romania. It was such a powerful explosion that at least 70 ambulances were sent out to the airport, which is located 40 minutes southeast of the Russian capital by express train. The wounded were taken to nearby hospitals, said the state television news anchor. The police are searching for these three accomplices who are also responsible for this terrorist attack and security is heightened to its highest level during attempts to rescue passengers and clear out the bombing debris.
President Dmitry Medvedev ordered heightened security at all of the country’s airports and train stations and delayed his departure for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, scheduled for tomorrow, his spokeswoman Natalya Timakova said. Russia’s Investigative Committee, which conducts criminal probes, said the blast was most likely carried out by a suicide bomber whose identity has yet to be determined. Video footage of the attack’s aftermath posted on YouTube showed bodies strewn on the floor and thick smoke in the arrival hall. The attack was the worst in Moscow since last March, when 40 people died in twin subway bombings during the morning rush hour. Doku Umarov, a militant from the southern Russian region of Chechnya, where government forces fought two wars against separatists between 1994 and 2000, claimed responsibility.
