Russian Submarines off US East Coast

Two Russian nuclear submarines have been navigating the international waters 200 miles off the East Coast of the US.

The Pentagon has been keeping an eye on the Akula-class Russian subs, but is not expressing any alarm.

"Navies, including the United States, operate around the world. Vessels operating safely in international waters ought not to concern anybody," he said.

Another U.S. official familiar with the intelligence, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "Alarm bells are not ringing."

One of the subs remained at sea while the other docked in Cuba. No word on what-- if anything-- the subs were carrying.

The missile defence shield may end up bringing a lot more such subs into that area.

Well, it's in the international water zone, but still, I wonder why are they suddenly showing up around the East Coast?

It seems to me they're not operating covert.  When they come down the St. Lawrence Seaway we should start worrying.  I think their interest is in the Arctic Ocean though.

As USA submarines cruising near the Russian waters, Russia do the same near the USA. They always been here undetected.
But this is fun:
"The U.S. Navy has the capability to locate, identify and track submarine activity through satellites, ships, aircraft and classified systems."
Then this:
"...The location of the second was unclear."
LOL
