Rwandan War Criminal Idelphonse Nizeyimana is Finally Arrested
One of the main orchestrators of the Rwandan 1994 genocide that has been heavily publicized in "Hotel Rwanda" and "Shake Hands with the Devil," Idelphonse Nizeyimana has been arrested in Kampala, the Ugandan capital. During the Genocide Idelphonse was an intelligence chief for the Rwandan military. As a member of the inner circle of Hutu intelligence and captains Idelphonse was responsible for war strategy and operations.
He later directly ordered killings of Tutsis and in at least one case participated in the killings himself, the indictment says.
During 100 days of bloody violence across Rwanda which began after a plane carrying the Hutu president was shot down in April, some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed.
The violence was well-organized and methodically executed - bands of Hutu soldiers and local militias systematically slaughtered their Tutsi neighbors and many Hutus who refused to co-operate.
Many of them were brutally attacked with machetes before being left to die in agonising pain.
Since the 1994 Rwandan civil war Mr. Nizeyimana fled to neighboring countries to hide where he was named one of eight main leaders of the genocide. His capture greatly increases the chances of finding other Hutu war leaders.
