ANC President Jacob Zuma speaks 8 Jan 09

South African ANC party leader Jacob Zuma will indeed face criminal charges after the country's supreme court overturned an earlier court ruling tossing out the indictment. General elections are coming up in the country and the ruling is certainly bad news for Zuma's African National Congress party.

South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal on Monday overturned a ruling that tossed out corruption charges against ruling party chief Jacob Zuma, opening the possibility of new prosecution.

The ruling dealt a major blow to Zuma, leaving graft charges hanging over his head as he leads the African National Congress (ANC) into general elections, in which he is a frontrunner for president.

Judge Louis Harms read out the verdict in a nationally televised hearing, saying the lower court had overstepped its authority in throwing out the charges with a ruling that had implied political meddling in Zuma's prosecution.

Now that is big, and not good for the ANC. They may want to look for a more suitable leader with less judicial problems. However I do think it is good for South Africa and just in time.

Strange, though, that the ANC will probably glide easily through another national election regardless of any scandals in the midst.  Though the ANC has triumphed over much in the past, it would be nice to see a true democracy take hold in a country that is currently governed by what might be considered one party rule.
