President Barack Obama, under growing criticism for not seeking to end the ban on openly gay men and women in the military, is extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.

Obama plans to announce his decision on Wednesday in the Oval Office, a White House official said Tuesday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the president hadn't yet signed the presidential memorandum.

I think this is a good idea, and really, why not? I don't see any problem with it.

Although I do think that the ban on gay men and women in the military is just silly, I don't understand the reasoning behind it.

By the way, I think your source is a bit mixed-up as the source for this story is this same story, so you might want to change that.

Nobody should be penalised because they're gay, military or otherwise. Changing practices embedded in American culture for generations takes time and Barack Obama is doing his best. Changing beliefs that gay people are not sexually normal may take a little longer. I am not gay myself but I love gay men, they are so gentle, warm hearted, kind and thoughtful.
