Samoan Islands: Location, Population, And Tsunami Record

Until the devastating 8.3-magnitude earthquake and tsunami hit the Islands of Samoa yesterday morning, not many people were aware of the particular geography and location of Samoan Islands.
The epicenter of yesterday's deadly earthquake was 200 km off the coast of and inbetween Samoa and American Samoa. The Samoan Islands span an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, consisting of 13 different islands. However, geo-politically the archipelago is split into two territories -- the Independent State of Samoa occupies the western part of the Somoan Islands, while American Samoa belongs to the United States and occupies the eastern part of the islands. Fiji Islands are neighbouring the Samoan Islands on the West, New Zealand on the South and Hawaii on the North.
In total, 250,000 reside on the archipelago -- over 180,000 people in Samoa, and around 60,000 in American Samoa. In the wake of yesterday's earthquake and tsunami, at least 63 people were dead in Samoa, and 30 were killed in American Samoa.
Samoan Islands do not seem to have a long history of tsunamis -- yesterday's tsunami appears to be the largest one to ever hit the islands in recorded history. During the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed thousands of lives, American Samoa received a 13 cm-wave. The 1960's earthquake off the coast of Chile started off tsunami waves in the Pacific, which eventually reached Samoa and caused some damage.

I hope a united effort for relief and assistance for Independent Samoa and American Samoa can be achieved without concern for the political divisions.
