Sandy Herold, the Owner of Travis the Chimp Who Attacked Charla Nash, Has Died

Sandy Herold reportedly died of a ruptured aortic aneurysm on Monday night leaving behind the woman who was mauled by her pet chimpanzee Travis.

In February 2009 Travis the chimp attacked Charla Nash who was helping Sandy Herold lure him back in to the house. Ms. Nash sustained extensive injuries including the lose of her hands, lips, nose and eyelids. She had to undergo massive reconstructive surgery and gave an exclusive interview to Oprah November 2009 where she revealed her appearance.

Charla Nash and her family have filed a lawsuit for $50 million against Sandy Herold and want to file a $150 million suit against the state of Connecticut. Originally Charla Nash had stated that Sandy Herold knew that Travis was dangerous when she called her for help.

It is not known what will happen to that lawsuit now that Sandy Herold has passed away.

The family says state officials failed to prevent the attack.

Charla Nash was recently cleared to leave the Cleveland Clinic and was transferred to an assisted living center in Boston, but one day she wants to move out on her own again and live a normal life. Ms. Nash does not remember the attack from the 200 pound chimp who was shot to death on the scene.
