A Man, Woman and Child Are Dead After a Gravel Truck Lost Control and Crashed Into Their Santa Barbara Home

The names of those killed have not been made available to the media at this time, but Santa Barbara Fire Captain Gary Pitney says that the accident happened just before 7am on State Street.

It is thought that the truck was carrying a double load of gravel and was turning from State Route 154 on to State Street when the brakes seemed to fail.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the impact of the crash completely destroyed the home and buried some parts in the gravel the truck was carrying. The bodies of a man, woman and child were found in the home after the crash.

Pitney says neighbors reported there may have been a second child in the home and a search-and-rescue team is scouting the wreckage.

The driver suffered facial cuts.

The truck was overloaded.  It should not be coming down the pass with that kind of payload.  What a sad scenario that caused this accident! In fact, this is not an accident. It is negligence. This could have been avoided with due care. The truck was either loaded with too much material, or the brakes were not maintained, or something else. Moreover, the truck driver should have been able to take better evasive action and crash into something other than a home. The result is an unnecessary loss of 3 lives. I am sorry for the victims, their friends and families, even the truck driver, and pray for them. -S. Edmond El Dabe, Los Angeles Injury Attorney
