Re: Sarah Palin is a Nightmare

Most of the lies about Sarah Palin's record had been discovered before she made her acceptance speech.  Yet, she repeated them, along with a misleading truth.  It seems the idea is why let a little fact get in the way of an applause line.

We've had almost eight years of expedient lying from a president and vice president.  I see no need for more.  Yet, there are so many born-again McCainers who are enraptured with MooseMamaMania.

So, ol' "Straight Talk" McCain must be figuring why let the truth stand in the way of good hype?

The truth was known about her bridge to nowhere stand.  She was for it.  The truth was known that she only cancelled the bridge out of political expediency when funding had been cut and it endangered other "earmark" pork barrel spending for Alaska.  It was known she did not send the money back.

However, in her acceptance speech, what did she say?

I told the Congress "thanks, but no thanks," for that Bridge to Nowhere.

If our state wanted a bridge, we'd build it ourselves. When oil and gas prices went up dramatically, and filled up the state treasury, I sent a large share of that revenue back where it belonged — directly to the people of Alaska.

More indirectly to the people of Alaska, as it went into other projects, not in a check to its citizens.

Then, we get the jet line.  You know, she had a good story there.  She identified a piece of wasteful spending in a poweful symbol.  She campaigned against it, and got rid of it when elected, saving the taxpayers money.  She coyly hedged her statement there and allowed the McCain campaign, the nominee included, to do the actual lying.

That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay.

Yes, she put it on eBay.  It didn't work.  The Republican speaker of the house stepped in, found a broker and sold the plan at a minimal loss to a Republican backer (who now says the state owes him $50,000 for maintenance fees he had to incur).  There is no mention of a public bidding process to sell the surplus state property, but this is a Republican administration and no-bid contracts for friends simply follows the national example.

Her statement left the impression the plane sold on eBay, but it was strictly true.  Of course, one was led to believe that by the GOP background video that played before her speech, which came out and said it.

It befell to her hero John McCain, who she did not support in 2000, to do the actual lying about the plane's sale.

"You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay -- and made a profit!" McCain declared in Wisconsin at a campaign stop on Friday.

As a mayor and as governor, Palin has relentlessly pursued, not fought federal "earmark" spending, even hiring a crony of U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens (R), who is under federal indictment for corruption charges.

This year, Palin, who has been governor for nearly 22 months, defended earmarking as a vital part of the legislative system. "The federal budget, in its various manifestations, is incredibly important to us, and congressional earmarks are one aspect of this relationship," she wrote in a newspaper column.

Wasilla received $11.9 million in earmarks from 2000 to 2003. The results of this spending are very apparent today. (The town also benefited from $15 million in federal funds to promote regional rail transportation.)

Palin, he [McCain] said, was "disgusted" that small towns like hers were dependent on earmarks.

Public records paint a different picture:

Wasilla had received few if any earmarks before Palin became mayor. She actively sought federal funds -- a campaign that began to pay off only after she hired a lobbyist with close ties to Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) [emphasis added - ed], who long controlled federal spending as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He made funneling money to Alaska his hallmark.

As mayor, she used federal funds and borrowing to get a city of about 5,000 - 7,000 into $22 million in debt, and ended her term as she began with a city that had no water treatment plant.  As mayor, she did lower property taxes, but raised sales taxes.  Those who owned property got a break, part of which was consumed by the sales tax.  Those who did not own property got an overall tax hike.

Then, there was the community sports center, for which Ms. Palin pushed through the sales tax hike.

The only catch was that the city began building roads and installing
utilities for the project before it had unchallenged title to the land.
The misstep led to years of litigation and at least $1.3 million in
extra costs for a small municipality with a small budget. What was to be
Ms. Palin's legacy has turned into a financial mess that continues to
plague Wasilla.

"It's too bad that the city of Wasilla didn't do their homework and
secure the land before they began construction," said Kathy Wells, a
longtime activist here. "She was not your ceremonial mayor; she was in
charge of running the city. So it was her job to make sure things were
done correctly."

It also appears she has ruled city and state government alike, insisting on total loyalty for continued employment or favor.  That must rate high with her Bush handlers.

She even comes equipped with her own, built-in ethics scandal.  No one will have to start one for her.

That is the record of someone fighting for fiscal responsibility and reform?

As for the snide attacks and lies about the Democrats in her acceptance speech.  That's really not her fault.  The speech wasn't written by, or even for, her.

In the meantime, she already had been given an old Bush Campaign handler to tell her what to do.  If she truly objected to any of the things she said in the speech, she did not have the courage to stand up and defend her stand.

What's the difference from a true reformer and an opportunistic pretender?  The truth.

In the end, she keeps on lying.  Her supporters lap it up, despite the facts they are shown to prove her falsehoods.

It is not a disease that is unique to the Republican Party, wanting to believe something so much that truth only gets in the way.  It just seems the disease has grown to epidemic proportions in the GOP over the past eight years.

Sadly, McCain, who once fought back nobly, now is suffering from a terminal case, and those who slimed him and lied about him and his family now embrace and defend him.

The "Maverick" is now a steer and has ring in his nose.

I guess we are going to have to listen to these stories maligning Sarah Palin for the next 8 years.  The response of the American public, who are basically fair-minded, is to cancel their subscriptions to Us Weekly by the thousands.

Did she lie about putting the plane on ebay?

I think McCain should start taxing male fancy hairdos.

Oh yes, we will have to listen to this and worse. I think it's time to re-read Atlas Shrugged, which so brilliantly predicted all this type of behavior.

While the left accepts major lies from its own--oh, say John Edwards, Bill Clinton (perjury!), Obama--it hunts down any small discrepancy it can find about anyone who achieves by means of honest, hard work (vs. voting "present" while loping about looking for a better job than the one for which payment--and family perks like doubling of salary--are feeding the fops). I actually saw something where someone, obviously deficient in the nuances of the English language, raged that McCain was a liar because he said that Palin sold the state's luxury plane on eBay. Was the sale consummated there? No. Was it sold there? Yes. Could the sentence have been  constructed in a more impeccable fashion? Sure thing--oops, sure thing is a lie, because there really isn't a "sure thing" provable in casual conversation, but never mind, let us press on. McCain or anyone else could have said: "The airplane was proferred for sale on eBay, in public view, and although the sale was not consummated on eBay, the state eventually did make a profit off a sale that was privately completed after the enormous publicity of the eBay venture."

Boy, that would make a lousy insert into a speech! Most people would be nodding off or seeking a doughnut if speeches sounded like that.Amazingly, the ones quibbling over this little nuance of the multiple meanings of "sold" as well as the popular usage, all seem to express their views in material that has errors in grammar and errors in presentation! And they don't see that! That's what makes it funny--in spite of the danger of the hatred. I truly think this election is going to prove if the U.S. is going to continue to grow and advance, as McCain has outlined, or just disintegrate while pleasing the unpleasable rabble, most especially the always-growing entitlement crowd.

I absolutely love that it's now totally accurate to use the word "fop" in political conversation these days! Maybe just a tax on designer suits, shoes, all things foppish. Ever notice how McCain looks, clothing-wise, just like a regular guy going to church while Obama always looks ready for a high-end clothing fashion shoot? McCain's plain stuff is going to go down well in the small towns that Obama has shown such contempt for.

About the plane, from Chicagotribune.com:

Instead, the 23-year-old 10-seat Westwind II was sold in August 2007 for $2.1 million to a Valdez, Alaska, entrepreneur; that's about $300,000 less than a broker's asking price, according to news accounts.

Also, while Palin characterized the plane as an extravagance of former Gov. Frank Murkowski, who arranged for its purchase in November 2005, the plane saw heavy use transporting Alaskan convicts.

Alaska does not have adequate prison capacity and contracts for space with a private facility near Phoenix. On Thursday, 24 percent of the 4,546 Alaskans in jail or in prison were serving their time at Arizona's Red Rock Correctional Center, said a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Corrections.

When the state first began using the plane in November 2005, prisoner transport accounted for 58 percent of the jet's use, and Murkowski's office used it 23 percent of the time. Over time, Murkowski's usage increased.

Pep,

Here is the definition of "sold" according to dictionary.com.

sold - verb used with object

to transfer (goods) to or render (services) for another in exchange for money: dispose of to a purchaser for a price

See sold is past tense, inferring that the deed was done. Now if they had said she had it for sale on Ebay, that would be okay. If they said that she was selling it on Ebay, but sold it elsewhere, then it would be a different. That would be the truth, far more forthcoming that than the previous statement.

To make a comparrison, it would be like me saying you would eat crow, or you ate crow.

What they said didn't match up to reality, it was distorted to gain political sympathy. Or as Palin would say, it was "nonsensical".

My point is, "Here is more information about the plane."

All I've got to say is that it's too bad Mr. Obama hasn't actually made any decisions for which republicans could nitpick. Seriously, how are you supposed to pick apart someone who doesn't have a record?

That's probably why libs are so adamantly behind this guy. Senator Obama is whoever they want him to be.

BigT, you're right--the perfect "Mr. Me Dress-up Doll" candidate. Appearing in a media outlet near you as "The Chameleon." Now, there's change for you!

Beautifully stated!  May I also point out another difference between modern liberals and conservatives?  When President Nixon was implicated in the Watergate situation, prominent Republicans went to him and demanded that he resign.  When Bill Clinton sullied the presidency and committed perjury, every Democrat circled the wagons, attacked Linda Tripp and Paula Jones, and spun and lied to protect their power center.

Since the dialogue is about picking grammatical nits, I of course am accepting that you and every other person picking those nits always, always, speaks and writes with perfect grammatical choice. (I don't, so I don't have to worry about perfection.) I'll so look forward to proving a simple thesis: those who overlook major ethics issues (Clinton, Edwards) to pick at nits can do so because, when one examines them, they have done every little nit perfectly, always.

And, to ensure that all the little nits are picked, we shall, of course, do the nit examination in Latin, including declensions. Ready? Because now it's really going to get down to the nits. To properly use and understand the concept of the words "sell," and "sold," having gone back to the mother of all Western languages, we must now deal with 2 different verbs. Plus, we must conjugate them, through six tenses and both active and passive voice.

Two verbs. Basic Latin. Conjugation. Then, of course, if you use it in a sentence, you will then have to properly decline each of the nouns according to the case of whoever is performing the action. That requires working the construct through the six major cases, as required, in addition to the declensions.

Wow. That's a lot of nits, if we want nits.

Now, should anyone run out of nits after the Latin exercise, for additional fun, present the results of the nit-picking excursion in yet another language (not English) altogether, while maintaining correct presentation of the Latin when explained.

Have fun. As for some, we'd much rather concentrate on major things, like Obama's links to a known terrorist and a minister who believes in "Africa first" and "God damn America." And then there's the guy Obama helped, and vice-versa, Tony Rezko.

How my Latin professor would have enjoyed knowing that some people's votes are going to be determined by the nits about one single word, which in Latin can be two different words. Nits. They're everywhere these days, it seems.

And nits are so large that they can obscure an Edwards, a terrorist, an America-damning preacher, a convicted felon, all part of one candidate's personal and professional life.

Callingyou on it

Hear is an example of your media darling, Sarah at work. I was going to post the youtube link of the actual audio. But, surprisingly its no longer active. hmmmm Oh yeah she later apologized....so I guess that makes it all better.

Anchorage Daily News ripped into Gov. Sarah Palin's appearance on a morning "shock jock" radio show as "plain and simple one of the most unprofessional, childish and inexcusable performances I've ever seen from a politician."

So what happened? Palin has repeatedly feuded with the state's Senate president, Lyda Green, over a wide range of legislation. Last January, Palin appeared on "The Bob and Mark Show," whose host Bob Lester despises Green. That's when the trouble started:

Early on in the conversation before Palin started to crack up, Lester referred to Sen. Green as a jealous woman and a cancer. Palin, who knows full well Lyda Green is a cancer survivor, didn't do what any decent person would do, say, "Bob, that's going too far."

But as the conversation moved on, Lester intensified his attack on Green.

Lester questioned Green's motherhood, asking Palin if the senator cares about her own kids. Palin laughs.

Then Lester clearly sets the stage for what he is about to say by warning his large audience and Palin. He says, "Governor you can't say this but I will, Lyda Green is a cancer and a b----." Palin laughs for the second time.

What were teenage boys thinking when they heard the governor laugh at someone being called a b----? How about the teenage girls who look up to Palin. What did they think when they heard her laugh?

But there is more. Lester then describes Green's chair as big and cushy. A clear reference to the senator's weight. Palin laughs a third time. She's just having a grand old time.

Palin was clearly enjoying every second of Lester's vicious attack on her political rival.

She ain't no Hilary

The new darling of the GOP is in my opinion nothing more than a ploy to gain women's votes. The GOP is running scared and they should be as every lie and half-truth she tells is quickly exposed.

Obama does have a record as much as McCain and more so then Palin, the problem with his record is that it is far better then McCain his own and there for difficult to attack, why the republican now have to result to smear and emotional BS. Somewhat low in my opinion.  I suppose blindness and ignorance are bliss for American's rather putting up with feel good lies, then hard painful facts.

Wow.  You go to a lot of trouble to explain away a blatant falsehood...reminds me of "depends on what you mean by 'is.'  Both McCain and Palin could easily and effectively have said, "I/she put it up for sale on ebay!"  The truth makes the same point about doing away with government waste without unnecessarily embroidering the story for greater effect.  The embroidery tells me that neither McCain nor Palin value the truth very highly and I find that a dangerous quality in a leader.

"Quibbling over this little nuance of the multiple meanings of "sold"...."sold" is past tense and by definition means an item exchanged hands for money.  There is no common usage of the word 'sold' to mean putting a single item up for sale, but not selling it.  Making an ad hominem attack ("obviously deficient in the nuances of the English language..raged that McCain was a liar...) to justify calling an apple an orange discredits your own support of McCain-Palin, as it reveals you to be a MY Candidate Right or Wrong, principle, integrity and truth do not matter voter.

(Note McCain also said she made a profit, which confirms that McCain meant she put it up for sale AND sold it on ebay.  This statement is untrue, as is the statement that she made a profit.  She sold it to a Republican businessman for $600,000 less than market value.

Boy that's some dirty pool...  You throw Obama's name in there as being a liar...  What is he lying about?  I know. as we all do, that McCain and Palin have been caught red-handed lying and you want to make the excuse "well, everyone else is a liar too"  Not a good enough reason for me to support McCain any longer.  We have been given more than enough evidence to believe he plans on running the same game on the American people that Bush/Cheney have been at.  I am ashamed for any American that would vote for someone who will repeatedly lie to your face and never back down from their lies.  Do not compare Clinton lying about getting a blowjob to Bush's disastrous Administration.  It won't hold up, not now or in the future.  There is a big difference between personal indiscretion and dereliction of duty.  I am so sick of that mentality in this country.  Stop putting criminals in the White House, for your own sake, if not everyone else's!

This is the first political blog where I've seen the word "blowjob".

What is the confusion over the definition of the word "sold"??

I suppose it depends on what your meaning of the word "is" is.

Thanks for opnening this topic! Many aren’t impressed by Sarah Palin running as politician. The factors behind this are almost about the controversies surrounding along her life including her personal life and family. Sarah Palin, as we’ve all know, campaigned on the idea that she was against earmarks, or government funds that are pegged for a specific cause.  The only problem is that she asked for $140 million to be set aside for her state, which makes Alaska one of the biggest users of earmarks in the U.S.  This is after she gave a large cash advance building an oil pipeline. And she's also having her daughters' contentious break up to deal with.  Rumors are still going around about her running in 2012, but if she fails to live up to campaign promises it won't be an easy sell for Sarah Palin  for President.

Can someone please confirm when Sarah Palin's father Chuck Heath qualified for the Boston Marathon and when he actually ran the Boston Marathon.
