- Other members of Anonymous returned control of the Yahoo Mail account back to Sarah Palin so that no further damage would be done.
- The hacker announced that it "was easy" to enter her account:
As detailed in the postings, the Palin hack didn't require any real skill. Instead, the hacker simply reset Palin's password using her birthdate, ZIP code and information about where she met her spouse -- the security question on her Yahoo account, which was answered (Wasilla High) by a simple Google search.
- As of now, the ctunnel admin/founder believes he may be able to derive the user's IP address from the proxy's logs. Uh oh for that guy.
Sarah Palin's email has been hacked by members of a group known as Anonymous. Yep, this group who have left insightful and annoying comments on blogs across the Internet, as well authored many works of art, including the 'Footprints' poem.
Anonymous has been most famous for its 'war' on the Church of Scientology, which culminated in world wide protests. This time, though, they gained access to Governor Sarah Palin's Yahoo email and sent the contents to Wikileaks.org, "an untraceable mass document leaking and analysis" wiki.
The e-mail, a message of support to Palin, tells her not to let negative press get to her and asks Palin to pray for McCorkell, who writes that "I need strength to 1. keep employment, 2. not have to choose."
According to Kim Zetter of Wired Magazine, McCorkell confirmed that she did send the e-mail to Palin.
Subsequently tests by Wikileaks reveal that both Palin's "gov.palin@yahoo.com" and her unrelated "gov.sarah@yahoo.com" account have now been deleted, almost certainly by Palin herself.
According to the Guardian, who has looked at the Wikileaks data, among the emails in Palin's account were several from addresses belonging to her aides, including a draft letter to California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a discussion of nominations to the state court of appeals, and several bearing "DPS", the acronym for the Alaska Department of Public Safety.
DPS supervises the Alaska state troopers. Could the e-mails in question be relevant to the brewing ethics storm over Palin's push to sack her former brother-in-law from the force?
The contact list included also holds accounts for other official representative's private email accounts, including those of Alaska's Kris Perry and Sharon Leighow.
Whatever people think of Sarah Palin, this is an incredible invasion of privacy, especially with some of her private family photos made public. And as Obama says, family is off limits.

It's definitely going to be interesting how they deal with the fallout. Wikileaks is a hard Web site to nail down legally, governments have tried to shut it down before.

I agree with this. Personal pictures, and stuff about her kids, off limits. This is a crime, I believe, to hack into an email. Though most of us don't have the privilege of having Republican lawyers to help us pursue this further when it happens to us in the private sector.
I will say, though, that it was brought up weeks ago that she was using private email accounts to send messages with regards to Trooper Gate. She had better hope that none of the personal emails show hanky panky that go towards her involvement in that matter. Whether it was obtained legally or not, if it is bad, it can hurt her even further. Covering it up is already hurting her.

The Secret Service and FBI have requested all of the information from the AP. Gawker.com along with a few others will get cease and disists. In Alaska it is a 5 year penalty. In the US it is at least a year. Hackers don't usually allow footprints of their activities. Where the pressure will be is on the sites who posted it. They will claim they cant reveil their sources.. but that does not apply to a Federal crime, especially to a Vice-presidential candidate.
What bothers me is that the left is focusing on the content of one email that has a descussion between Palin and her LT Gov. Calling it state business when she was just complaining about the press. To me it looks like the left thinks it is fine for a hack of Palin... if this happened to Obama it would be all over the news and there would be total out rage. whatever happened to being an American and a country with the rule of law?

It more than likely, wont, happen to Obama! I think he is more aware of situations like this than to let it happen. Breaking into his personal email yes it could happen, but no state affiliated information would be found! People forget that the Back Male American always have to dot their Is and cross their Ts then tripple (black women have to double)check it in order to get on the same level as their fellow white counterpart! I hope people dont take offense to this but this is TRUTH! People are comparing him to Palin about knowledge and he was the president of the Harvard Law Review and she graduated college after going to several lower level schools before then. He went to one of the most prestigest High School in HI and she went to the local High School in AK and people still compare them as if they ever were on the same level!!! THAT'S INSANE!! I am NonPartisan and was looking to be swayed one way with this election and seeing that people feel like Obama being a black man, achievements are minute compared to Sarah Palin is again, INSANE! I think she seems down to earth and all but I need a little ( I mean a LOT) more than that to feel comfortable with her as a VP or future President! Not to mention she is the only canidate that gets to pick and choose who she speaks to with regards to Q&A appears as if they are hiding something although their slogan is straight talk They havent had straight talk in so long that it scared me into a Democrate;)) I never expected that, Im glad it happened before the elections! I think you're wrong, and that because Obama is (half) black, he can actually get away with more. He got away with saying his grandmother is a "typical white person" and "you make sure your child speaks spanish", among other famous quotes. Imagine if McCain or Palin ever in their life said, "typical black person" or "America should be bi-lingual"..... among other famous quotes: "punished with a baby", "side with the muslims", etc... I also don't know where you're from, but if you're "black" you can get into colleges easier than "whites" nowadays, not that there is such a thing as biological race.

LU: Get your facts and use of the English straight. Your comments are all Racially biased far more than political biased. I know the Chicago ploitical process and that is what the Obama campaign has and continues to run by. Basically it's Robin Hood in reverse by action once in office. Check OBAMA'S political record in depth to date before you pass judgement politically. As far as education. Try this little fact on for size.

This man did not have an elitist education yet came to be one of if not the most brillant minds to date. Give up ? His name was ALBERT EINSTEIN !! My son has the grades 3.8 gpa. 2 college courses finished with high grdaes.All honors courses and 2 more college courses again this year. Big deal right. Well he's a senior in high school. However we can't send him to Brown or Cornell or Pepperdine not to mention the other as you would put it higher grade schools due to cost even though he has been approached by them . So it's not the school as much as the person who is learning. By the way I'm a life long Registered Democrat and Iam voting McCain/Palin and have listen to alot of other people saying the same. More are for McCain/Palin than Obama and Biden in Hiding!!! Have a Nce Day

Obviously, hacking into private e-mails is a crime and wrong.... but kudos anonymous for trying to get some truth out of someone whose been hiding illegal things and getting around subpoenas for the emails in the first place.

The moment one releases data into cyberspace, one should always assume that the contents may become public, even though this is not fair and does not promote a sense of security. I am sorry this breach of security happened to Gov. Palin, but we must all be aware that the same breach likely happens to each of us every day. Therefore, it is prudent to think of email as a means of speaking not only to the person you are addressing, but potentially others as well. This is especially true if one corresponds with personal friends or contacts using their employers' computers. I believe employers have the right to read the emails and to monitor your Internet surfing.
Even if there are laws against violating peoples' electronic correspondence, people should realize there are many lawbreakers, and some of them wear white collars and are technologically sophisticated. I have experienced many unusual problems since embarking on my justice quest for Larry Neal and for mentally ill prisoners. Breaking into peoples' private email accounts is probably child's play for gifted computer techs.
I hope Gov. Palin's correspondence carried nothing that could be used against her or her constituents, and that all of our vital government records and systems are safe from such unethical shenanigans. Some things should be off limits, even during elections. This is shameful.
