The woman was arrested by the religious police for asking two young men, who were not relatives of hers, to bring her five loaves of bread.

A 75-year-old widow in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 40 lashes and four months in jail for mingling with two young men who are not close relatives, drawing new criticism for the kingdom's ultraconservative religious police and judiciary.

The woman's lawyer told The Associated Press on Monday that he would appeal the verdict against Khamisa Sawadi, who is Syrian but was married to a Saudi. The attorney, Abdel Rahman al-Lahem, said the verdict issued March 3 also demands that Sawadi be deported after serving her sentence.

He said his client, who is not serving her sentence yet, was not speaking with the media, and he declined to provide more details about the case.

Again, I suggest that anyone who does not understand that Saudi Arabia is like any other predominately Muslim Arab country with the same religiously imposed (pun intended) denial of human rights on women and their actions, go to a bookstore. Read an account by even the well to do women of the monarchy. It is eye opening.

Very true, harringtola.

Hear, hear  Moonwolf. The hypocrisy of both our lameduck "5th estate" presstitute and the framers of our foreign policy is appalling. Selective morality is shameful and is best reserved for poolside dinner parties rather than presented as "real" news for public consumption.

And yet we still allow people who believe in this brutality to make OUR countries their home!

Whoah!  I can't believe that people can actually inflict so much pain to a person, an old woman at that, just because of some cultural belief whatsoever.  I just hope that they start to open up their mind a bit.  Change is actually not that bad.  Why don't they try it even in a gradual manner?

Whoah!  I can't believe that people can actually ......

Respect for women, old age and care for children etc are the characteristics and traits of human cultures and civilizations.

What else can we expect from  such "countries". The amazing part is that this is the culture they are planning to spread across the world through terrorists organizations like Al Queda and Taliban, by  denouncing and denying education to women and blowing up shrines and schools.

"such countries" treatment is similar if not the same treatment the nazis did to the jews and modern israel's treatment of palestinians.

If this story is true then the Saudis are morons. Nowhere in the quran is this behaviour advocated. We are all equal under God any true muslim believes this

Firstly:, Zeet, good story. Rarely do we hear much if anything  from our mid-east Muslim allies, especially if it shows them in a bad light.

Next: People wake the FLOCK up. We can not use our ideologies and legal beliefs to judge others. Is this incident a bad thing; in my OPINION, yes it is but there is not a thing that I can do about it and flapping one's gums won't change that. The only thing that can are the people who live there and until they choose to do something OUR thoughts and opinions mean to those in power over zero and nothing.

As to Shariah Law, I believe is right that there is no as such law. But like ALL such laws they are interpreted and enforced by man (and yes woman too). Sadly it is the same Islamic cleric zealots that are doing both in this case. And the Saud officials will do what ever to keep themselves in power and the liberals and religious zealots out. Yes what is going on is BAD, but as we have seen, it could get infiniteley worse.

Lastly: I have noticed a growing hypocrisy here, a more than quick willingness to condemn one party but NEVER both when needed. I think we ALL need to look at ourselves and rethink some things, myself included. I also think that the 5th estate here in the USA should also re-evaluate itself as to practices. Unfortunately the powers that run said estate I don't think will give up it's profits to tell the unvarnished truth on my say so.

Although petition signing does have its part to play, every little helps. There is an organisation called equality now that deals with human rights abuses against women all over the world; Saudi arabia and Iran are two of the worst offenders but to be fair to my religion Brazil and chilli also fare quite badly.
