A woman in upstate New York will be spending 12 weekends in jail for putting the lives of more than three dozen kids in danger while drinking and driving.
Surveillance video shows the older kids pleading with the drunk driver to stop while the younger kids sob uncontrollably. Martha Thompson, 56, was driving erratically, hit a mailbox, and rolled the bus backwards downhill while she had 37 kids aboard her bus.
Martha Thompson, 56, of Almond, N.Y., was also sentenced Monday in Allegany County Court to six months of electronic home monitoring, five years probation and mandatory alcohol counseling, and fined $1,000. She had pleaded guilty Nov. 2 to driving while intoxicated and 37 counts of reckless endangerment, one for each of the Alfred-Almond school district students she transported on May 8.
