The cartoon says: "Research Concludes: "WE ARE DESTROYING THE EARTH" and the two fellows with the government briefcase say, "Could you kindly rephrase that in equivocal, inaccurate, vague, self-serving and roundabout terms that we can all understand."

Science Idol: The Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest
Editorial Cartoons Can Be Funny. Political Interference in Science Is Not.

This spring, creative minds throughout America had the opportunity to show off their artistic and comedic talents in support of independent science by entering the third annual Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest. After hundreds of cartoons were entered and over 20,000 citizens voted, Justin Bilicki is this year's Science Idol with this winning cartoon:
Read more about Justin and see all contest finalists.

And new this year, the original watercolor print of the winning cartoon is being auctioned off by the artist, with all proceeds going to UCS. Bidding closes August 30.

Recent investigations and surveys show that political interference in science has harmed the ability of federal agencies to protect our health, safety, and environment. While guarding against last minute attacks from the outgoing administration, we are building a foundation to guide the next president in restoring scientific integrity to federal policy making. The next president and Congress must renew the independence of science at federal government agencies and create a thriving scientific enterprise.

Thank you for the flag, Rumana. Ideally, politicians are supposed to be public servants. The idea that they are our 'controllers' - or 'regulators' has long passed it's 'use-by-date' ...but, the question remains, how long before the rotten ones get thrown out?  I'm highly recommending the BBC docu. "The Trap" - by Adam Curtis. It can be viewed online. It makes sense of the 'economic rationalist' approach to 'everything', which definitely must end asap. What we need now is 'economic democracy' or economic 'holism' if we are to reclaim the global commons.

The original cartoon that won the Science Idol cartoon contest is up for auction on Ebay. There are only a couple days left to bid.

It's the original watercolor of the cartoon. There is only ONE of these. Up close you can see all of the subtle imperfections and details that get lost in the print.

All proceeds for the auction go to The Union of Concerned Scientists. If you'd like to make a bid,  go to www.bilicki.us and follow the arrow to the Ebay page.

Thanks!

Justin.
