Raptors Set Season High with 127 Points in Win against Magic
Our Raptors News blogger writes that the Raptors “sure looked pretty good” last night when they took on the Orlando Magic (127-110). Toronto set a season high, just short of the franchise high of 129 points. Chris Bosh had an amazing 40 points, his fourth 40-point game of the season, “going 14-for-16 from the field and 11-for-11 from the foul line. Jose Calderon had 19 points and 13 assists. “We have to set the tone for the rest of this year,” Bosh said. “It's going to be a big year for us, I think. We're in a position to do some good things.”
According to the post, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said that Bosh “destroyed” Orlando’s center Dwight Howard. “We're going to have to think about double-teaming him next time.” Raptors’ coach Sam Mitchell said, “When Cris is making his jump shot, he is just too hard to guard.” Other kudos go out to Carlos Delfino, with 23 points, including five 3-pointers. “Jamario Moon had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Anthony Parker scored 10.”
Fifth Annual “Come up to My Room” Mixes Art and Design
Paul on Blog TO announces the 5th annual Come Up To My Room event at the Gladstone Hotel. This unique event features “wonderfully beautiful (and clever and weird and inspiring and playful and intriguing) projects Canadian artists and designers have thought up.” The curators, Pamila Matharu and Christina Zeidler, don’t curate specific submissions, but instead “trust selected designers and artists based on their past work.” An added twist is that “neither curator is allowed to see the show before doors open to the public.” This makes for a wide range of work exhibited in each of the hotel rooms.
The curators specifically request the invitees produce new work for the event. They describe it as “the cross-over world between art and design… a chance for artists/designers to push limits and explore new territory by showcasing personal dream projects and to refuel or challenge themselves creatively.” The opening reception is Saturday (February 23) from 7-10pm, although the show opens its doors on Friday. Evetn details are listed in the post.
Cycling Community Mourns Loss of Eugene Yao
Vic at I Bike TO pays respects to Eugene Yao, co-founder of the Urbane Cyclist. Yao “passed away on February 12th after a struggle with illness.” There will be a memorial for him on February 23 at 4:00pm at the Cecil Community Centre. Vic remembers Yao as “always busy in the back of the shop working on customers bikes… smiling and happy.” No one could “change a pair of hand grips” as fast as Eugene could.
Vic writes in his post that this is not only a big loss for Yao’s family, but for the entire cycling community. More information can be found on TorontoCranks and at Activist Magazine.
Resident Reviews What We Lost in the Fire
Sarah B. Hood over at Unknown Toronto bids farewell to several of the businesses destroyed in yesterday’s massive fire on Queen Street West and “the cluttered, lively, shabby exuberance that was the 600 block.” One of the stores destroyed was Suspect Video, which boasted a “delightfully idiosyncratic collection.” of films. Another beloved store that was lost was Duke’s Cyclery. Owner Gary Duke is known for being “very active among the bike retailers in town.”
Nikolau was another favourite of Hoods. “It was a serendipitous source for cooking tools that were hard to find elsewhere.” Other stores devastated in the blaze were National Sound, Preloved, and Ali Baba. It was fortunate no one was seriously injured. Although Hood writes in her post that she hopes the city “will rally around all the business owners and residents and help them rebuild their homes and work and lives.”
