Military storehouse fire rocks Central Russia, thousands evacuated

Eight military personnel were killed during a cleanup operation at Russian arms depot in Ulyanovsk.  Ulyanovsk is located east of Moscow and the arms depot was the scene of a large fire earlier this month.  That fire claimed the lives of two emergency workers.

"Eight soldiers died as the result of a munitions blast at the 31st arsenal of the Russian navy in Ulyanovsk," the Russian defence ministry said on Monday.

Alexei Kuznetsov, a defence ministry spokesman, said a shell detonated when military personnel were loading ammunition onto a lorry to be taken away and destroyed.

The Russian military has been struggling with outdated equipment and poor training since the disbandment of the former Soviet Union.

This is the "resurgent" Russia, that is going to reclaim the glories of the Soviet?
