The story of LTTE will be analyzed in many different aspects in many years to come in the study circles based in Berlin to Brussels. However, in a realpolitik sense the greater section of the Thamilar, be them Eelamist, Indian, moderate or separatists, will remember the LTTE for its unparallel self-sacrificing commitment to the rights of the Eelam Thamilar with some spectacular military campaigns. However, in the same breath no one will be able to forget its dismayed political failures. One lesson if willing to learn, stands clear as the midday sun: That is, be it the LTTE led by Velupillai Pirapaharan or the PA led by Percy Mahinda Rajapakse, failing to embrace democracy when it is at hand will bring the destruction that even a divine destiny will not be able to stop.

Looking at a post-war / post-LTTE Sri Lanka. Read the full article here

The article looks at the military demise of the LTTE in Sri Lanka. The author suggests a number of reasons as factors for the Government's gain over the terrorist group in the past 2 - 3 years, and delineates at what cost the 'victory' against the LTTE has come about. In the end he submits that only a constitutional process will guarantee a just and lasting peace.

I have read the article and others mentioned in this author's earlier posts. They are good,  But just posting little links here is equal to spamming. - IMHO.

Don't do this if you are serious.

Good posting. Thank you.

However, the post will definitely irk Sinhalese extremists due to its discussion of the Sri Lankan conflict from all angles.

For the benefit of NP readers, I shall lay down the 4 points discussed in the article posted in groundviews.org.

The link to the original article is this.

Four things done, Four things undone: The self-immolation of the LTTE

LTTE as a traditional military force is toast. The end brought to them by three parties (according to the author).

1. India Government for Sonia Gandhi
2. US counter terror agencies
3. GoSL using the wounded lion, Gen. Sarath Foneska

And the four reasons, as the author see , for the fall of LTTE.

1. LTTE tried to be the "sole master" of the entire tamils in Sri Lanka. They wanted the whole "Eelam" for themselves and ruthlessly killed all other tamil representatives. In addition LTTE evicted 92,000 Muslims from the areas where they control. That was a strategic suicide. Along with this LTTE became overconfident of their military might that was supported by the wealthy and resourceful Diaspora. Based on this they sought a military solution to Eelam rather than going the way of negotiations. They also underestimated the SLA's ability to amass resources in a short time frame.

2. LTTE thought that the Indian support for Sri Lankan government will go if they managed to kill Rajiv Gandhi. But he did not realize that only a few number of people, that too in Tamilnadu, who support the "Aryan invasion, Dravida demolition" theory envisioned by the "Dravida brigade" in Tamilnadu . Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi stripped of any and all  public support that LTTE enjoyed in India. India too, flexed her diplomatic muscle and got the LTTE declared a terrorist organization and made it banned in majority of the developed countries. This alone was the biggest hit on their revenue from the Diaspora and other illegal routes. So sustaining the military strength has become a logistical and economical nightmare for LTTE.

3. The killing of moderate tamil leaders who supported the path of negotiations and diplomacy. The killing of Dr. Neelan Thiruchchelvan by a LTTE suicide bomber in 1999. Before his assassination he was working with President at that time, Chandrika Kumaratunga - who was his childhood friend - for a peaceful settlement.

International condemnation of the assassination and praise for the work that Neelan had done were swift, with prominent persons like U.S. President Bill Clinton expressing his sadness at the tragic death.

In July 2001 scholars from 53 countries voted to award Dr Neelan Tiruchelvam posthumously with the first Law & Society Association International Prize. The prize is “in recognition of scholarship that has contributed significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the field of law and society”

The assassination of Neelan did two things. One, virtually all the moderate tamils distanced themselves from the Sri Lankan's struggle. Second, Lakshmanan Kadirgamar who was in the background till that time and was a friend of Neelan , single handedly confronted LTTE in the international arena. LTTE got itself isolated internationally where as Kadirgamar made sure that the world knew that the militant view of LTTE does not represent view of the Sri Lankan Tamils. LTTE had to assassinate Kadirgamar too to stop him - but not before he did a considerable damage to it's terrorist support base.

4. Pulling the leg of Ranil Wickramasinghe. Prabhakaran called for a boycott of the election.
That brought in Mahinda Rajapakshe..!!!

....The END...
