Breaking News -  12:53 am ET, CNN - John King and 12:55 am ET FOX News Channel Confirmed Delaware Senator Joe Biden is Barack Obama’s VP Choice

By Albert N. Milliron, Editor, Politisite.com, Iron Mill Interactive Media, Inc

It began early this evening as folks around the world began to anticipate a text message from the Obama camp.  Earlier, the Obama Campaign gave people the opportunity to receive a text message or email when he had picked his Vice-Presidential choice.  This was a great piece of Public relations work that caused a frenzy to more then just political pundits and junkies.  It was anticipation felt around the world frankly.

The Text never came as the 7pm news was approaching.  The leaks began, an Obama-Bayh Bumper sticker was posted on the web an Intrades stock price from Evan Bayh began to rise.  Then the cameras switched to Waco, Texas to Nancy Pelosi's pick, Congressman Chet Edwards was interviewed by Fox and told reporters that he had been Vetted but did not tell reporters if he was picked.

Than names began to drop off the list.

We found out that Clinton was never officially vetted for VP, Check

Governor Kaine told reporters that he was called and was not the pick, (source: Fox News)

We reported in another story, "Oh Bayh the way, you can drop Gov Kaine off your list as well. (source: Fox News)

Then we were told that we could just shut off our cell phones as the text would not go out until the early morning between 9-10 am.  The text would not be sent until 3-4 hours before the Public Announcement is made. (source: A little birdie inside the Obama camp)

Then we reported that Evan Bayh was bumped, we said "Bye Bayh" (source: Time Magazine)

Politisite found out that Former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn would be out of the country so we Checked him off (source: CNN)

Then the big one.  at 11:00 pm we found out that Senator Biden got Secret Service Protection, BINGO!  (Source: BigT)  I found out 3 minutes after BigT posted it.

Then in the early morning hours slightly after midnight we got

politisite, Breaking News Biden picked as Obama's Running Mate

Earlier NP coverage of this from BigT is here.

BigT got the Secret Service detail  story on Biden which almost confirmed the pick.  He did not CONFIRM the VP Pick,  he speculated the pick.  You need to stop your,  "earlier coverage comments", Mostly they are link backs to your stories.   BigTs story is already listed in another story of  Mine

Biden gets Secret Service Protection, BINGO!  (Source: BigT)
.  Everyone knows that I post others work that is related to the content so your comments are unnecessary.

Since you started the discussion on what you want people to say, I'll reply. Thanks for the opportunity.

No, linking back to other coverage is fairly standard on NP--even staffers do it. Had you followed the link, you would have seen it was Big T's, with others contributing to it.

The problem here is that one story was already working, and others were contributing to it. Then you came in and--again, for the 3rd time in one day, flagged your own work to move it up.

I think that using your "crown" to flag your own work to move it up is unfair. I think that then changing your work, without noting what's been updated, is misleading. I also think that writing it to say, over and over "we found out" (as though you had exclusive inside information) when what you "found out" was not only widely available, but available on NP, is a bit...boasting and makes it sound like the post is about yourself, rather than reporting on someone or something else.

Actually, no one really confirmed the pick--until the Obama camp did. To be precise.

If you don't wish to have other people comment on your stories, then ask NP for your own special feature that blocks comments. If you don't wish other people to provide useful information to other readers via links, then get comments blocked "just for you." Some readers like to have a wide range of information and links to prior coverage--and don't care "who" has it as much as they care about having many resources.

The editor's "crown" should be used to benefit the whole site. You, frankly, have consistently used it to  promote yourself. And politisite, I think that's just plain darned wrong.

BigT had *the* best, freshest, and "hottest" story of all, IMHO, with the Secret Service heads to Biden's house story--but he did not flag his own material as "breaking," as you did yours. He put it out there, did not use his flagging ability to promote himself, and just let people read and respond to the information as they chose. I respect that so very much.

I started reading your "stuff" again, but sadly, have found myself back in the same place, so I'll just move along to other contributors.

BigT and I were emailing back and forth during the whole night.  You have the chonological order incorrect. You might want to go back 3 days when I said Biden Obama's likely pick source says.  Regarding the flag.  I had the first story that confirmed Obama/ Biden ticket.  You said on Big T that AP has confirmed it.  My story was more than ten minutes before the AP as I caught John King via Satellite say back to control he had confirmation.  I can flag my own story if it is breaking.  I don't abuse this.  If you noticed, I attempted to flag your story as breaking when I removed my flag as you lived closer to the train derailment. Then you comment, Oh I have better things to do.  BTW I flagged two not three.  Both were breaking news and I caught them first.  Thats news PEP thats news.  BTW before I had a Obama /Bayh don't buy it story that was a VP watch all night.  So BigT did get a crucial part of the puzzle and we said BINGO in and email.  I started the search for confirmation.  BigT was added to my story before you even stated it, so your comment was unnecessary.  Staff handles the trackbacks.  I have asked you not to comment on my work in the past as you are a trouble maker and lash out when you miss a story.  How many ways do I need to say you are unwelcome in my threads.  Please note I was the FIRST one to Flag BigTs story and he rose to the top as well.

You are welcome.  Everything leaks.. BigT got the big one as Drudge posted a link to ABC news story that said secret service was detailed to Biden.  It was all over except for the confirmation.  I got a CNN alert, Then a Fox, than AP.  I figured I would build up how the story came to fruition as I am your big political junkie.  So I made the story sound like a hockey game LOL   Oh I am glad I am contrubuting to greening the world by this story and you may rest now.

First of all, I'm sorry to make this comment on the story and not in the forum - I just want to address something.

There seems to have been a discrepancy last night between this story and this one here about which story was first to announce the news of who Obama's VP is, and which story should have been flagged as breaking.

It's always hard when a staff member isn't working to moderate which story was first and which one should be flagged. However, this is why we have given 'breaking news flag' privileges to our Guest Editors. We do not favour our GEs flagging their own stories as breaking when a staff member is not working, unless there is no other story on the matter and theirs is the only one.

It is always difficult when two stories are up about the same thing and a piece of news breaks that is important (such as Obama picking his VP - finally!) and then the authors have to decide as in the case of the other story, to change the title of the story and flag as breaking here.

As GEs, you have to set the example and work together to decide how to do this so that these discrepancies don't occur. We want our coummunity at NP to work together and PM each other to collaborate on a story together - it's much more fun that way and then we don't have a division along the lines of 'which story should have been flagged and which story was first'.

I hope this helps, and if you wish to discuss it further, there is a new forum topic here.

Thank you.

It was wonderful being there! It was hot but people were polite and enthusiastic. I could barely catch a glimpse of either Obama or Biden, but my camera got a better view than I did. I was shooting blind (holding the camera above the crowd) when I got this shot. My young Canadian cousin was with me and we both felt it was an experience of a lifetime!
