SEPTA Train Fire in Philadelphia Adds Delays to the Septa Strike
A fire on the Paoli-Thorndale train route near Overbrood Station stopped service on the R5 and R6 lines in Philadelphia this morning according to SEPTA, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority.
The service was restored two hours later, but this comes on the heels of the SEPTA strike that began two days ago and has already delayed commuters and students traveling to school.
Delays could be found on nearly all trains due to a higher volume of passengers as the fire took out two lines for a few hours. Schools and offices are open during the SEPTA strike so people are expected to get to work.
"Parents, who have children that usually take SEPTA to school, should make alternate transportation arrangements for children to attend school," the District said. "If a student cannot attend school due to the SEPTA service interruption, parents should contact the child's teacher for assignments."
Many offices have set up websites for coworker to car pool if they need to as they will be penalized if they are absent.
The strike by Transport Workers Union 234 began at 3am on Tuesday, just after Philadelphia hosted the World Series.
Routes affected are:
Trolley routes 10, 11, 13, 15, 34, and 36.
All lettered city transit bus routes and well as buses 1 through 89.
Owl service and Frontier Bus routes 90 through 99.
High Speed Line 116.
Still running are:
Regional Rail
Bus, trolley, and high speed lines in surburban areas.
The green and gold loop service from 30th Street into University City.
Some parking restrictions have been suspended in areas of the city and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia is urging people to travel by bike if they can.
