Servillano H. Toreja Foundation distributed financial assistance to bright and smart students who graduated as Valedictorian and Salutatorian from different public elementary and high schools in Ibaan in a program held at District Hall of Ibaan Central School, May 4.
The event also coincided with the distribution of financial assistance to their previous scholars whom the foundation has taken under their wings in the last three years since the program started.
The event also started with the official blessing of Ibaan Central School District Hall which was officiated by Fr. Arnel Hosena, OSJ. Ibaan District Supervisor Mrs. Eloisa Samson, in her speech, was all thankful since she has been asking the local government through Mayor Danny Toreja to have the District Hall improved and renovated. Such favor was granted and now, it’s officially blessed and operational.
Servillano H. Toreja Foundation was created and formed in honor of the Toreja Clan Patriarch Servillano H. Toreja himself. “Ka Banoy”, as he was popularly called and known during his time, is considered to have started and pioneered the sugarcane plantation industry in Ibaan between 1960′s and 1970′s. Since then, others have followed his example which resulted to a big boom of the said industry.
Currently, his son Cornelio “Arnel” Toreja is overseeing the operation of the family’s plantation and has been bringing technological improvements and developments in promoting the same.
The SHT Foundation started granting scholarships informally with the adaption of relatives from Brgy. Munting Tubig, who would come and ask for their help for as long as the family could remember (Toreja family originally hailed from Sitio Sta. Margarita, Brgy. Munting Tubig before moving down town). It was Ka Banoy himself who would stay in wee hours of the night entertaining visitors for the same purpose.
Almost a year before Ka Banoy passed away, together with his sons Mayor Danny, Cornelio (Toreja Sugar Farm), Dionisio (Toreja Construction Corporation) and Dr. Noel, talks and discussions were made relating to granting of scholarships and financial assistance to worthy beneficiaries particularly tapping those who would graduate as Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
Some teachers close to the family, like Mrs. Eloisa Samson, then requested that other schools, aside from those coming from Gregorio Memorial Elementary School in Brgy. Munting Tubig, be included to the family’s program. The request was graciously granted and the rest was history.
Unfortunately, the program was not immediately formalized during Ka Banoy’s time. He fell ill for a moment then finally decided to embrace God’s light. Since then, the Toreja men decided to have the Servillano H. Toreja Foundation formalized in honor of their father who dreamed of having a better Ibaan by fueling young intellects’ dream.
Currently, Mr. Dionisio Toreja sits as the Foundation’s President with members of the family as members of the Board of Directors.
Compared to full scholarship grants, the Foundation, for the time being, is granting only financial assistance. Although it doesn’t cover every academic financial expenses, the grant can still push a beneficiary’s dream of going to school. Cooperation from parents is still being encouraged so as to further support their daughter’s or son’s studies.
According to Mr. Dionisio, the program almost runs for nine (9) years which would start from high school until the beneficiary graduates from college. And every year, financial assistance will be granted.
More interestingly, the Program does not require the beneficiary to maintain a certain level of grade during the duration of the grant. The beneficiary will continue receiving the grants for as long as he shows his/her perseverance to finish his studies or college course. However, of course, for a beneficiaries, they are expected to give and return justice to what they are receiving.
The only thing that SHT Foundation is asking in return is to “give-it-forward” once the beneficiary has established themselves. The Toreja family is asking the beneficiaries to be a “Good Samaritan” to others so as to continue the Program and lead more of Ibaan’s young intellects to a better future.
Rey Manuel A. Valencia, a resident of Brgy. Munting Tubig, came to the event with his story with the SHT Foundation to share. Taking on the podium, he accounted the way how he became one of the Foundation’s grantee.
Rey just graduated from Rizal National High School, Brgy. Rizal, Lipa City five (5) years ago. Realizing his family can’t support his studies, he went on the hunt for scholarship grants that would make his dream come true. Luckily, he qualified with SM Foundation. However, SMF provides only a meager amount of money, almost not enough to make him graduate from college.
Together with his grandfather, they went to Ka Banoy’s house and humbly asked for financial assistance. Together with the members of the Toreja family, Rey and his grandfather didn’t burst another words and their request was granted despite being an SMF scholar already.
Rey just graduated from Del La Salle, Lipa City, finishing Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with honors. He is currently taking his review class in Manila for his Board Exam. His review class expenses is still being supported by the Foundation.
Another SHT Foundation beneficiary, Andrea Acebo, also from Brgy. Munting Tubig, although she failed to come to the event, also expressed her gratitude to the Foundation through her parents. Andrea is now a registered nurse and currently working in Dubai.
Remembering Ka Banoy
Mayor Danny Toreja struggled to hold back his tears when he was called on stage to share some stories about his father Ka Banoy. And as he speak of the days when his family still lavish Ka Banoy’s presence in the house, the hall went dead silent.
According to Mayor Danny, during those days when his father was still alive, he never experienced having a big crowd of people thanking him for what he has done for the good of many. Members of the family regretted letting their Ka Banoy pass away without giving him the elation, together with the people, that he deserve the most.
He also recalled that he and his brothers would go against their father whenever their father would extend and open his hand that much to people they hardly know. But then, Ka Banoy was persistent. The master of the house insisted to his family that giving an ounce of help to anyone, when done at will and in good faith, a return should not be expected. A little of what the family has that they can extend could change someone else’s life.
Now they have come to age, they realized what Ka Banoy was telling them -that is, to be at the service of the people and to return to Ibaan the blessings it has given to them. And to continue his legacy, the family decided to establish the Servillano H. Toreja Foundation.
One Glass Of Milk
Mr. Dionisio Toreja, being the Foundation President was also called on stage. To everyone’s surprise, he spilled a story of a boy and a lady.
As per Mr. Dionisio’s account, the boy was a travelling merchant. While walking on the streets, the boy felt terribly hungry. Unfortunately, he has no money to buy food. He decided to knock on one of the houses and willfully told himself to ask for food if the the door opens.
The boy knocks and the door was opened by a beautiful lady. Amazed by the lady’s beauty, he asked instead for a glass of water. The lady went inside the house then returned with a glass of milk. The boy took the glass of milk to his satisfaction.
But since he asked for a glass of water but was given a glass milk instead, the boy asked how much owe the lady of the milk. The lady answered, “when you give something at will, you should not ask for anything in return”.
The boy left and kept the words he heard from the lady. It changed his perspective of the world. He told the boy that he will always remember the lady.
Years passed and the boy became a doctor. A news reached him that a certain lady from a certain place is ill and needs serious medical treatment to survive. He felt fear for he remembers a lady from the said place. His fear was confirmed. It was the lady that gave him a glass of milk.
The boy turned doctor did everything he can to help the lady. But he didn’t introduce of show himself up to the lady. Eventually, the lady was cured and now worries about her hospital bill for she has nothing to pay. The doctor took the bill and wrote “already paid by a glass of milk”.
The bill was returned to the lady. And when she read the note, she burst into tears as memories of a hungry boy before her door steps came rushing back to her.
The following are names of the beneficiaries of the financial assistance granted by Servillano H. Toreja Foundation.
