Seven people lost their lives and several were injured in Karachi yesterday when 54 mm of the first heavy downpour greeted this rain-starved city; reports various media sources. Karachi also plunged into darkness when the entire power generation and distribution system of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) collapsed, plunging almost 85 percent of the city into darkness.
On Tuesday evening, Geo News television channel reported that the Sindh government had deployed Rangers in the city to control traffic jams on the city's main arteries. A relief centre has also been set up in the Rangers headquarters to provide assistance to the rain-stricken citizens.

thanks paschen and rob for flagging it. i may add here that when i went out across the city today, the roads appeared to be in a much better condition than what we have been experiencing in similar situations previously. the drainage system that has been put in many places recently seems to be working. nevertheless, it is a shame that seven people lost their lives and scores were injured either due to electrocutions or their house walls falling on them.

Thanks. Just when the clouds looked ominous and more rain was expected yesterday afternoon, the rain god decided to ditch us! It is once again bright, sunny, humid, and some areas are still without electricity. The city's low-lying areas have standing rain water but other than that it is business as usual.
