Another clash recently happen in Europe. Between Georgian and separatist South Ossetian forces have exchanged fire and wounding several people.

At least six people have been killed in clashes in the region in recent days.

Russia's special envoy to the region, Yuri Popov, has gone to the Georgian capital Tbilisi for the talks, but South Ossetia has refused to take part, saying it will only agree to a meeting at which the Russian region of North Ossetia is also represented.

"The South Ossetian side, in connection with recent events, has voiced doubts about holding such negotiations. If this is the case, then I... will conduct shuttle negotiations," Mr Popov said.

The Ossetians have traditionally had good relations with Russia - unlike some of their Caucasus neighbours - and North Ossetia is part of the Russian Federation.

UPDATE:

There could be an end to the fighting soon.

The United States and Russia have agreed to work jointly to end fighting in Georgia's breakaway South Ossetia region, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Dan Fried said in an interview on Thursday. Fried told Reuters he had just spoken with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin by telephone, and "we both agreed to work together to get the fighting stopped in South Ossetia, and encourage political dialogue."

You're welcome.

Another update:

At least 15 people were killed in the shelling of Tskhinvali, the capital of Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia which is besieged by government troops, a Russian television correspondent at the scene said. "I confirm that there are at least 15 dead," said correspondent Andrei Chistyakov, who is now in Tskhinvali. "These are the people whose bodies were seen in their yards and in the streets."
