'Sex on beach' trial pair guilty
The trial of two Britons in Dubai for having sex on the beach and unmarried sex has finished with the pair being found guilty and jailed.
This will hammer home the responsibility that travellers carry to make sure that they stay within the laws of countries that they visit.
A British man and woman accused of having sex on a beach in Dubai have been found guilty.
Michelle Palmer, 36, of Oakham, Rutland, and Vince Acors, 34, of Bromley, south-east London, were arrested on 5 July.
The pair denied charges of public indecency and having unmarried sex, but admitted consuming alcohol.
They have been sentenced to three months in jail. The offence could have carried a maximum of six years.
Earlier, senior prosecutor Faisal Abdelmalek Ahli, of the Dubai Public Prosecution, said the pair were likely to be jailed for between six months and one year.
They have also been fined $350 (about £200) each and will be deported after serving their sentences.

LotusFlower, I like this story. It's good stuff. This case has generated lot of interest about status of Dubai's as international city. I think local government which is trying very hard to sell city as hot property will need to re-look at some of the laws.

I side with the country on this one. Travelers will have to pay attention to the laws of the countries they visit. To consume alcohol and engage in public nudity and perhaps public sex in an Arab country tells me that the couple were thrill-seeking in the stupidest possible way. Better they should down some Mountain Dew and ride bikes down mountain cliffs if they want a thrill.

These two were arrogant and stupid. The cop who discovered them first told them to knock it off and let them go with a warning. When he came back, they were at it again.
I agree with you Lotus Flower about remembering where you are and following local laws.

LotusFlower, I like this story. I obey the laws here in the Philippines even thought the inforcements very weak. We must remember when we are abroad we represent our country and must take care not to offend and be arrogant. When we offend the natives get the idea that all our fellow countrymen are tied to the same brush of which gets us all a bad name. .
Why have sex on a beach, oh yes some people like the thrill that someone may see them, pretty stupid and pathetic anyway especially in a religous country.

LotusFlower, I like this story. It's good stuff. When we travel we feel that we are representatives of our country(Canada) and would not want to reflect badly on our home. I know that sounds really prissy, but it's the ordinary travellers that people remember. I agree that these tourists were stupid and arrogant. Why sex on the beach anyway? Just think about all that sand where it shouldn't be. Ouch!

At the time, Michelle had lived and worked in Dubai for three years at a publishing firm, so she most certainly was aware of the law. Unfortunately, a majority of the Brits here are used to getting away with all sorts of offenses. I think the pair are getting off lightly, compared to what sentence an Asian pair would have received in a similar or even lesser demeanor.
