Sex trafficking coalition to educate public March 19th
About 50 agencies and people across the Treasure Coast are teaming up to start a sex trafficking coalition.
“I’m dumbfounded as to people’s response to sex trafficking,” said Terri Pettengill, who attended a meeting on Wednesday about combatting sex trafficking. “When you try to talk to people about it they just say, ‘Oh, that doesn’t happen here.’ ”
Florida has the second-highest incidence of humane trafficking in the country, according to Shared Hope International, a non-profit organization based in Vancouver, Wash., with the mission of rescuing and restoring victims of sex trafficking. The organization said underage girls are the bulk of victims in commercial sex markets that include pornography, stripping, escort services and prostitution. Traffickers use force, fraud or coercion to control their victims.
