Thousand gathered in downtown San Francisco Sunday morning for the 39th annual SF Gay Pride parade.

The San Francisco Gay Pride Parade route went from Market and Beale Streets to Market and 8th Streets. The parade marks the end of Pride week celebrations in a city known for its sizable gay and lesbian community.

This year’s parade had more of a political edge as topics such as gay marriage and the US military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy were addressed. This year's political tone may have something to do with the fact that the parade took place on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, an event that is widely considered to be the birth of the Gay Rights movement.

Following the parade, parade-goers were invited to a festival at Civic Center, which will feature hundreds of vendors, music artists and food.

On a more somber note, it appears arson may have caused a fire that damaged the giant Pink Triangle on San Francisco's Twin Peaks.
