Sharron Angle sued by Righthaven LLC for Copyright infringement
The Las Vegas Sun is reporting that Righthaven LLC is suing Sharron Angle for copyright infringement and seeking $150,000 in damages. Another Las Vegas Sun article says, Defendant accuses Righthaven of misusing legal system.
Righthaven LLC, has made over 100 lawsuits against those that reprint stories or portions of stories with the links on their websites that originate from the largest newspaper in Southern Nevada. Even using a quote from one of their articles with the link could still get you sued.
The newspaper in question that shall not be named, is an ultra-conservative site and it has been said that they do not want the entire country to know that they are a right wing paper. The paper that shall not be named and it’s publisher who shall remain nameless has had an on going feud with Senator Reid, and most of their headlines bash Reid and the President. It will be interesting to see just how far Righthaven LLC will go with the suit against Sharron Angle, one of Reid’s opponents in the November election. But the CEO of Righthaven probably sees deep pockets and dollar signs.
Most news organizations like their stories quoted and linked back to the original site because it means more traffic to their site and more ad revenue. But not Southern Nevada’s largest Newspaper that shall not be named.
An excerpt from an article by Wired.com:
“Borrowing a page from patent trolls, the CEO of fledgling Las Vegas-based Righthaven has begun buying out the copyrights to newspaper content for the sole purpose of suing blogs and websites that re-post those articles without permission. And he says he’s making money.”
Several websites have been set up to help track the defendants that are being sued by Righthaven, one of them is called Righthaven Lawsuits. They have an extensive archive of articles regarding Righthaven, as well as a long list of those being sued.
Most defendants cannot afford an attorney to fight these suits,, most bloggers are just ordinary people who have regular jobs and blog or write in their off hours, but several are pulling their resources to fight back.
According to Righthaven LLC several other online news sites are selling their copyrights to Righthaven which will be trolling for more copyright infringements which will mean even more lawsuits.
News gathering sites and bloggers need to avoid using or linking to, any articles from newspaper working with Righthaven LLC. And the best way to fight back before a suit is filed is to contact the advertisers in the Newspaper and let them know that you will be boycotting their products or service and explain to them why you will not be doing any business with them.
