After Hussain Haqqani's resignation, Shehrbano "Sherry" Rehman, the former information minister of Pakistan and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader, has been named as the new envoy to the United States.

Sherry, a close aide of the former Pakistani premier Benazir Bhutto, had quit from her post in 2009. Through her NGO, Jinnah Institute, Ms. Rehman has been working on foreign policy issues including relations with Afghanistan & India.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani appointed Sherry as the Pakistan Ambassador to the US and expressed best wishes for her. However, the Sunni Tehreek (ST) has expressed serious concerns over this appointment. A petition has reportedly been filed in the Multan Bench of the Lahore High Court against the appointment of Sherry Rehman as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US.
