Shimon Peres the Israeli President collapses today during a Tel Aviv ceremony, and lost consciousness for a brief moment. He collapsed when he was standing at the lectern and at first refused to go to hospital but was later taken just to be on the safe side.

Mr Peres was appointed president in 2007 for a seven-year term, having held numerous cabinet posts including that of prime minister since the 1970s.

He was born in Poland in 1923.
