Making $150 million per year

5 crewmembers just relieved, the international tanker Association wants the military to control Somali coast . First time attention draws from Terrorists to Pirates. Or finance the pirates the terrorists. Or  both are just ordinary Gangsters of the 21st century ?

Who will pay for the military Escorts ?

The price tag may include in the product oil. Experience however from Australia with Fishing pirates is different. The moment you chase them, they look for another base, but don't give up or disappear.

Peter Swift, managing director of the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners, said stronger naval action -- including aerial and aviation support -- is necessary to battle rampant piracy in the Gulf of Aden near Somalia.

Some 20 tankers sail through the sea lane daily but many tanker owners are considering a massive detour around southern Africa to avoid pirates, which will delay delivery and push cost up by 30 percent, he said.

The association, whose members own 2,900 tankers or 75 percent of the world's fleet, opposes attempts to arm merchant ships because this may escalate the violence and put crew members at risk, he said.

Paschen..the Indian Navy, the US and Russian Navy are all in the area, well Pirates don't take them for serious, as long as they control the coasts, I agree. To avoid a total shooting and private wars we are obliged to develop African economy, to make this more attractive than pirating. If you have no chance you go pirating, and then shopping.

You are absolutely correct here SOLARLIFE. What is needed is not more Navy, but sound economy and fair trade as well as some major reforms at all level, EU, ONU, NAFTA, OUA and even OPEC and others as well.
