As the riots continue in Orissa, local police have been ordered to shoot religious rioters on sight, making public this order in hopes of quelling the rampant violence.

Parts of eastern Orissa state have been rocked by Hindu-Christian clashes since Saturday, when a popular hardline Hindu religious leader and four of his disciples were shot dead by unknown assailants.

"We issued shoot-on-sight orders in the wake of large-scale violence" despite a curfew imposed Monday, said local administrator Satyabrata Sahu.

Mobs armed with sticks went on the rampage, torching government buildings and vehicles and staging other attacks, he said.

Among those killed was a Hindu woman working at an orphanage who was burnt to death when the missionary-run facility was torched by a Hindu mob. Originally she was reported to be a nun.

Authorities have refused to reveal the religious identities of the other people killed in the clashes. But a senior police official, who wished to remain unnamed, said the dead included two Christians and two Hindus.

Stupid people why cant we talk out our differences. Only one religion can be the truth the rest are based on time distortions and corruption by the greedy powerful. If god is truly on your side then you dont need to force your opinions on people, discuss and let nature take its course. I am a muslim, we love jesus and mohammed, peace be upon them. Also ganesh ( the hindu elephant god) has a similar name to Ganeish one of the 99 names of (god) allah as mentioned in the koran

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Good God !!

I lived over there, and I can tell you from direct experience that by and large the Indian police are extremely laid back - very much so ...

On the other hand, I have seen some very dicey situations develop unexpectedly and very, very rapidly involving civil unrest ...

The situation must be very, very critical indeed if this order has really been given.
