Should America Close Its Door To Immigrants?

Boom! (shockwave, screeching, yells for my head), but do listen, first.

Over the past few hundred years, America has grown by leaps and bounds via immigration!  Immigration has transformed our continent, albeit much to the dismay of many Native Americans, who in all honesty were not really native to North America anymore than the others who came later.  They simply travelled more slowly back then.  So, you might ask, "How in the world can someone write such a hate-filled, biggoted, racist article as this evidently is", not counting the fact that you haven't even read it yet?  See, America, now that's what prompted this whole thing!  Racism.  ("Screeeech",...again, -- sigh.)  Yes.  America seems to have a need to extremely curtail, or even stop, immigration to our nation.  ...Heh, heh -- seee?  I did use the term "our", didn't I? (Big smile.)  Okay then, now we can talk.

According to the U.S. POPClock Projection of the U.S. Census Bureau ( http://www.census.gov/population/www/popclockus.html ), our national population count is nearly 307 million strong!  So, how do 307 million people of extremely diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and racial backgrounds possibly get along without destroying ourselves?  -- "Okay, you, in the back corner, your hand went up first."  "No, the answer is not to go destroy everybody else, instead (sheeesh)."   What we have to do is to get back to the wisdom of our founding fathers, for one.  We need to learn from our mistakes and perfect what guidelines they gave us, not look for a way to foil them or get "one up" on everyone not of our cultural or social "clique".  That will only set us back.

To foster that kind of spirit -- an attitude of  "one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all", we need to dispense with all the malarky and start walking the talk, and that includes all ethnicities and all races within the U.S.  You ever been in a fight or not want to fight someone that's mad at you, so you stuck out your hand and they punched you?  Well, that won't do, not if we want our nation to last, and by the way,....our standard of living is tied in to how well we can do all of this; or, haven't you noticed what happens economically to the countries that can't get a grip on internal strife and turmoil?  The money goes elsewhere, as instability is not a good environment for investors, unless maybe you're a weapons dealer, and that only goes so far and likely doesn't actually help the economy too much, either, in those places.  Look at the maps yourself : do we want America to become a torn, fractured shell of a nation like we often see all over the world during the evening news?

To "mend our fences" between fellow citizens, we need to foster genuine unity, which doesn't work too well when you're full of hate, anger, bitterness and resentment.  If you have a fire and keep on pouring lighter fluid on it, how quickly do you think it will go out?  Yeah.  We have had so many immigrants and so little assimilation that our differences are dividing us.  Oh, you can treasure your heritage all you want : I won't deny you that.  But, don't let it come between you and our flag,...or maybe I should say, between you and OUR  flag, because we're all in this together.  If you don't think so and want to keep on pushing some kind of sectarian attitude, then just remember that if the day ever comes that we live under the rule of another flag.  We all know about the "divide and conquer" strategy, so how can we be so blind?  We've seen oppression in other parts of the world, so how can we be so naive?  Communist China has a population of approximately 1.3 billion people (http://www.geocities.com/radioki2000/china.htm), a whole lot more than ours, their technological abilities are increasing very rapidly, and they are yet a communist dictatorship.  -- You know, like a big brat kid that will smack down any other kid on the block if need be to take their piece of pie.  Did we grow up stupid or something?  Why can't we see this?  So, what we need right now is to be united, not divided.

This is where the immigration problem comes in.  The U.S. has an estimated 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants within our borders.  We want to stop terrorism, but we can't even secure our borders.  Brilliant!  I know they need jobs, and I care about them; but, you know what, our citizens' needs come first.  Leaders of America, listen : "Our needs come first!"  We have many and various minorities in the United States of America who cannot find a job.  Maybe some lack training, so we need to get them some.  I have an idea : let's take some of the billions of dollars the U.S. spends annually on foreign aide give-aways to other countries, (some who seem to outright despise us), and let's help OUR people.  -- And do you know what?  All that money flowing down from here to Mexico and central America via jobs siphoned off by illegal aliens is OUR money, too, America.  It's being stolen : YOUR jobs are being stolen from you, and they aren't all low-dollar jobs that nobody else wants to do.  Really, a lot of them are decent jobs that rich businesses don't want to pay Americans a good wage to do, as they should be doing.  Then, people want to turn around and hate their fellow Americans because they are out of work or something -- just filthy hate, that's all, and it isn't right.

When we curtail the immigration and help everyone get a job again, then we can also have a chance to truly integrate, so we can respect one another better.  You know what, if you can put away your old flag, I'll bet a whole lot of others can, too, so we can all start being simply "Americans".  If you act different for the sole reason of making a commotion or stirring up a fuss of sectarianism, you are making a problem that doesn't need to exist, and there are trouble-makers in every race who know what this is all about.  It is up to the rest of us to help them have a better point of view, just like each family rasies up their own kids, cause they won't listen to other kids' parents too well, will they?  Folks, we need to get our families' affairs in order.  We need to bury some of our differences, and you know what, we need to stop rewarding bad behavior.  We need to help Americans to have opportunity, and if you don't study or apply yourself, then please just shut up and quit blaming everybody else for your problems, okay?  We can love you and care about you, but we can't live your life for you : you have to choose to do that on your own.  You have to choose to try, and if you get knocked down, to try again.  And if somebody doesn't help you right away, well try again anyway!  We also need to choose to care, and sadly, America is too often failing in that category.  It seems like we can sometimes be more willing to help someone in a far distant country whom we don't know than to reach out and help our own neighbor down the street.  Maybe it's due to all the fakers we've seen over the years, but we mustn't quit caring for one another and giving hope to each other.

When we've had time to heal and become a united nation, maybe then we can open our doors a bit more, but hammering a wedge of diversity, differences and foreign nationalism into our open wounds is not going to unite us.  It is dividing us : it is splitting us apart, and our pain is blinding us to it all.  If we don't stop this, we'll soon be "ripe for the picking", and it won't be any fun and games.  We don't all have any place to go back to, despite our differences, do we?  Will the 20 million illegals stand and fight with us if we ever are in a war?  Don't you think most of  them would just hurry right back to where they came from if the bullets start flying?  They waived their flags in our streets, while here illlegally.  Do you really think they will be in any hurry to die for us to help secure our freedom?  Let their governments care for them.  Some of those govern-ments have quite a bit of money they're sitting on!  If we get our people taken care of and need some extra workers, then maybe we can let some come on in with green cards, on a limited basis, but I see no reason in the world to just throw U.S. citizenship away like play money to everyone who steals their way into the country or who steals away American jobs.  If our citizenship is that cheap and valueless to you, please go somewhere else.  Oh, you can hate me all you want to, but I'm not playing politics, and reverse psychology doesn't win this argument.  Good day, America, and I hope you find your future great.  Think about it.

There are indeed "American" Americans. They were forced to live on reservations. The rest of us, by definition, have some sort of hyphen. This is because we were illegal immigrants.

The rest of the argument seems a bit simplistic: the US economy is just not equipped to deal with a purge of illegal immigrants.

The arguments for or against immigration are conjoined to the arguments around our treatment of Native Americans, whether we realize it or not.

I agree Jordan, First Nations always get screwed over, regardless of the political party in power.

It is true that they say the american indians came over on a land bridge from Asia, so in that way, they are also immigrants, and many of them invaded each others lands over the course of time.  Because they were divided, they could not resist the white man when he invaded, or immigrated, too.  As for the jobs and illegal immigrants from outside the country, if you put the sugar in the refrigerator, the ants will leave.  Native American poverty is a terrible thing, and it is last in people's minds, even after the foreigner.

If we want to effectively help the victims of the last several hundred years of development, then allowing immigrants does more harm, rather than less harm, to people of Amerindian extraction, African-Americans, and poor people of all backgrounds presently in the US.

Exactly.

Regardless of country of origin we are not a bottomless pot.

I am for restrictions.

You have some good valid points.

It will never happen for the lefties want that vote.

They will give them jobs in Acorn.  The government they think too is a bottomless pot.

The young people are working and do not study to know that we are already in big trouble.

Shame on Bush for not doing something about this situation.

Did any of you see how the Chinese mobilized their army to put down the those riots? They crushed them with overwhelming numbers. Think about it. They already vastly outnumber us and we are losing ground due to our low rate of reproduction. I think that are leaders are seriously worried about our ability to muster enough young men to defend ourselves if the need should arise. So...how to increase the population? Open the floodgates!

A divided America means failure.  A poverty-stricken lower class means resentment and no reason to care for or stand up for our nation, in their minds.  Foreigners who love their homeland more and only want our money, will flee if that day comes to us, especially if they hate us already.

Please watch the above movie.

"wedge of diversity"?  Your arguments don't have a crutch to stand on.

I hope people of color do not read what you said about "willing to die for freedom."  You are just plain wrong there.

Please do not try to use the words out of context.  Didn't you read that the whole premise of the article includes trying to help those of color who are legal citizens in the U.S.?  Many of them are willing to die for freedom if need be, and many such persons have proven that over the years.  The U.S. military is probably the most unbiased part of American society.  They know that their lives depend on one another and there is not room for petty bigotry, like what you seem to actually be promoting in your comments.  I am not wrong to think that people who have no loyalty to America...would prefer not to fight for (& risk death for) America.

I put it this way, we need to care for our own first before bringing in more mouths to feed. It does not make economic sense to bring in immigrants when we have homeless, jobless, and children getting the short end of the stick when it comes to education. In BC, certain Classes and courses in Universities and Colleges in BC are reserved for non Canadians, why? Because they can charge a premium, sometimes three times the rate  for foreigners, where as Canadians pay a set fee, pretty hard for a Canadian to pay a set fee when there is no room for Canadians in their own Taxpayer funded Universities, because the Greedy Bastards who run the Universities look to the almighty Foreign Buck.

In California there is a residency requirement to attend state community colleges and universities, usually it's one year, but this might vary.  In California this applies to anyone applying for entry, not just non-citizens. The fees and tuition for non residents are high, but I rather think this is to discourage people from coming here just to go to school.  I don't know the percentages of non-residents, but I doubt it is preventing residents from attending.  Having said this, some programs in community colleges, state colleges and univerities have long waiting lists for entry for everyone, but this is due to the lack of funding to expand the programs to accommodate the demand.

You might want to think about the connection between your title and your article... You are asking "Should America Close Its Door To Immigrants?" and then you are discussing illegal immigrants. Rather contradictory isn't it? Aren't they illegal in the first place because the door is closed (at least officially)?

There are more contradictions in your article as well... For example, you are arguing against help for developing countries. That's true the money doesn't go to you or your neighbours and I agree that seems on a first sight not justified. However, some of the main reasons why development aid is provided are actually NOT 'humanitarian'. Firstly, the idea is to provide help with development so that non-Americans do NOT have to (illegally) immigrate to the US or other Western countries... Secondly, it actually serves the economic interests of countries. I'm not too familiar with the direction of US aid but, for example, Japan primarily directs its overseas development aid (ODA) towards countries that are economically or politically interesting. So Africa did not really receive anything for a long time until Japan noticed that its application for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council won't have any chance without African support. Also you may not know that the primacy of development aid worldwide that is going to countries that have not much economic value is originating from NON-governmental organizations...

Basically, what I'm trying to say here is sure you are not wrong but do not assume you know the whole picture (what I don't as well). Illegal immigration especially to the extent the US experiences it, is surely an issue, but no offense, I'm pretty sure most of your belongings do to quite a significant extent not originate in the US. Do you really think US citizens (or any citizen of a Western state) have the right to receive the sole attention of their governments not caring about the effects their own greed and self-interest on people who may just have a different passport than you do.

One final remark... talking about caring about your neighbour. I agree that is the essential part of any community, but a community constists of people not of governments and citizens.

Let's see, your first paragraph attempts to blame the U.S. for the poverty of all others? -- Wow!  There is no contradiction, besides, try comparing the numbers of legal immigrants to illegal ones in the U.S., plus the fact that the government it trying to validate their being here illegally by simply reclassifying them as legal. -- Whacko! -- Some of them (not all, of course) are thugs!  You don't push ahead of all those who went through legal means to get here and validate illegal behavior regardless of who they are.  What a set-up for Al-Queda that could be.  Your own argument is like this, as if you are a jerk because you have not provided for everyone else's family...while your own kids are starving and left to beg in the streets.  The size of American aide to foreign countries is in the $billions -- not millions, but billions!   Meanwhile, OUR people suffer massive unemployment and debt burdens; and, if you think "we" have it bad, what about those in the worst places for employment, like inner cities and indian reservations?  They are tired of being last on the help-list, even behind foreigners -- even illegal foreigners perhaps.

Look, here is a link to a Forbes article about foreign aide spending, and while it tells about the middle east, it also gives other numbers, too -- staggering totals, all in all!

      • I agree w/Mortal..Barry..Queensheart, & yes the borders are supposed to be closed. It's on the books, not enforced.  A211423 your state of California is in the drain from your open border policies. Free everything , come on in, now you cry!  We as a nation should not have to pay your lack of responsibility!  Just like the credit card users, homeowners(no down pmt.), that bit off more than they could afford, politician, & business that promoted an open door policy.    illegal-immigration  effects employment, health care, crime , education, social secuity benifits, food stamp program, drug programs and on and on .

Some non-Americans are allegedly getting U.S. Social Security benefits, but I don't know the scoop on all that.  As for enforcing the Law, yes, the government has been committing the crime of refusing to uphold the Laws on the books.  If we disobeyed the Law, we might be jailed.  How is it different for the govt.?  I know of a man who was actually turned away from a job at a U.S. employment office while being told, "I'm sorry, they aren't hiring anyone from here this year : they're bring them all in on trucks, from Mexico."  -- Here, in the USA, his own country!  I hope somebody sues the government for their unemployment and forces them to start enforcing the Law!

Let them try it....the days of so called American supremacy will end.The immigrants are asset not liability for them. They lure best of the talents from across the world and say they are burden.Reverse brain drain already begun, this US generation will see its fall.

a211423 I viewed your movie.  I feel that once the American people get over the withdrawal of illegals(no matter what origin) our young people can fill these jobs as they used to,while going to school, ect.  Also, legals that are in this work bracket, and many unemployed, and ones that are on the welfare roles, will find employment. Also, seniors who are active enough to work but have been laid off,  lost all they have, or need help to supplement themselves.  Americans of all ages, ethnic, academic, and social levels who need work will be able to find it.  From there the cream will rise to the top, go on to make better money, and leave spots open for others in need just coming in.  It will be a process to get through, but it will work, if we will work ,  and get back to teaching our children to work.

sandl, et al

I respect your opinions, and I realize that in this economy especially in California the blame game is in effect.  However, I cannot share your optomism about Americans wanting to fill the jobs that migrant workers have done for years.  I can understand how on the surface this might appear to solve the problems of unemployment, but I don't think it's fair to shift the burden of our high percentage of unemployment to immigrants.  I would like to share a personal experience.  My son was laid off from a job he had held for over two years in February, then he was called back at the end of May.  The reason is several people who had senority over him were discovered to be illegal and using illegal social security numbers.  These were men who had been on the job for ten years.  Yes, I was extremely happy my son was called back to work.  I cannot support people coming here illegally, but is closing the border to Mexico a solution; indeed, has it ever worked?

Historically, Mexicans and South Americans have risked their lives to get here; therefore, we have to look at the reasons anyone would leave their families behind and risk everything for a chance to work.  The pull of opportunity is too great here.  To me the solutions lay in supporting countries south of our border to develop infrastructures and industry, so their populations don't need to come here.  No, I don't think American companies should go south or north for that matter.  We need them here.   Each country needs to capitalize on their own resources for sustainable growth now and in the future.  Our support would be helping those countries discover their assets within their borders, not sending American companies there.

Teaching children to work:  Americans have an extremely demanding work ethic.  Americans work longer hours and have shorter vacations than just about any other country you can name.  What we need to do is look at is the living wage, and adjust the minimum wage so no one who is working is living below the poverty line.

Your last two paragraphs are starting to make sense, but the rest is political double-talk I think, something based on emotion without thinking.  Your son might have had a better job all those years had it not been for foreigners working it, likely due to being cheaper on the company's wallet, overall, compared to a U.S. citizen.  C'mon, companies have an idea who they're hiring, even if they play dumb.

I EXTREMELY agree that the nations these people are coming from need to make better use of their potential to prosper and produce jobs for themselves.  Absolutely, and I don't mind the U.S. and it's business community helping in that.  Also, I'd rather see that help, here, "in our own backyard", than throwing American dollars into the coffers of the communists in Asia.

As for our young people?  Teens used to grow up having a work ethic, eagerness to find work, and also an idea of business thinking and the need to stay out of trouble if you want to get ahead better in life.  Oh, did I mention the learning of responsibility?  Now, too many kids are lazy, with bad attitudes, expecting handouts from their parents for everything.  Those who want to get work find it difficult to compete with the foreigners for low-$, entry-level jobs.  Our society is being wrecked, and so is that of the foreigners, except of course for the influx of U.S. dollars.  Teens are only teens for a short while.  Then the opportunity for such lessons and help for their attitudes is somewhat lost, with any bad results passed on to others -- younger siblings, peers, their own kids, etc.

Actually the employees that were illegal were making more than my son because it's a union shop and wages are not arbitrarily assigned.  When he went back, he got two raises because one was for moving up into higher position and the other one had something to do with the union requirement for that particular skill.   The employer made the layoffs based on senority, not on how much anyone was making.  Whether the company knew all along they were illegal, I do not know; however, they were long time employees.  And the company was bought and sold a few times in last ten years, so its quite possible the current owners who are European did not know.

My comments are neither emotional, nor double talk.  This is a case where you and I disagree.  I respect your opinions and would not discredit them with emotional appeals.

Regarding young people:  More young people than ever voted in the last presidential election. This is a clear indicator that not only are they responsible, but they are empowered to participate in the political process.  Your generalizations of "teens" as being lazy and irresponsible does not rest well with me, so we disagree again.  It's unfortunate that most of the time teenagers seem get press is when something bad happens or they commit a crime.  Most teenagers are good kids trying to get through school and prepare themselves for happy productive lives.

I did use the term "too many kids", not "all", right?   Voting, like sexual activity, does not constitute responsibility simply because you can do it.  I guess we'll simply agree to disagree.

0
a211423

I was referring to your term "too many kids."  Your point of view is shared by others, and I believe that it is the responsibility of some of us to speak up and have a more positive view of young people.  My views are liberal and yours are conservative.  So, yes we agree to disagree respectfully.

With regards to voting:  To me voting is precious right and should never be taken for granted.  Some people in the world in countries like Iran risk their lives to vote.  As citizens of a democracy, voting rights are protected by law and give each of us a way to share in the direction of government.

A majority of Americans  know very well some of the immigrants are an asset!  We both need each other.  This is about QUANTITY.  It concerns legality.   Your attitude of enjoying the fall of America is disgusting.  It is advantageous for the Globe that America succeeds.

We have some  'SOME'  corrupt leaders who make bad decisions but let me tell you  something young man. ... We have plenty of moral, decent , loving , hardworking people who have made America.  Evil grows and it can be minimized.  Hating a country because perhaps you are out of the loop at  this particular time in your life or your entire life is non productive for your spirit.  Work on your own inventory and stop focusing on enjoying the downfall of a wonderful country built  by immigrants.

My brother hired some mexicans to chop weeds on our farm.  They did the best job and even better than expected so he gave them a lot of extra money.  He hired some blacks on another farm in another town and he had to "let them go".  White boys and black boys have grown up thinking they are entitled just as immigrants too think that when they step on our soil they are entitled to school, health care etc. etc.ETC.   THe leaders who moved our factories started this in my humble opinion.  People in my parents generation could work and support a family.  Now no one can who is in middle to lower class .  Many factors are involved but the real problem in your country and everyone else is no connection to spirit.. They will all suffer and pay for their greed. It is everywhere sir and America is not the only one contaminated by lack of soul.

We go down so does everyone.  The sneering and hope will be no victory when it becomes a reality from all the ignorant things Obama is doing.

My son also employed immigrants who worked wellin his landscape business.  The white boys could not stand the heat and the blacks would not even try.  The men need to have their families here with them and not just here for harvest time.  It is not fun to go home and live with other men.  They end up drinking and carousing on weekends for they are lonely and need some kind of entertainment but alas they got to honky tonks and end up in trouble quite often.

We need them  , they need us.   There has to be a limit and boundaries .......
