Shreveport Sinkhole: Six Teens Drown In Red River Sinkhole
Six Teenagers Drown After Falling Into Sinkhole In Shreveport, Louisiana
It was supposed to be a day for family and friends at a barbeque, by the water near Shreveport but it turned into an awful terrible day as 6 teenagers fell into a sinkhole in the Red River Lake.
Shreveport Fire Chief Brian Crawford said it was a devastating loss of life that started with the children and teens playing in the shallow water - none were swimmers.
One child ventured off into an area that he was unfamiliar with, and some of the other children had gone off with him," Crawford said. "They went into the vicinity of an 18-foot sinkhole. And once one started toppling into that sinkhole grabbing a hold of another, trying to save another, eventually seven were pulled into the hole."
A bystander jumped into the water and rescued a 15-year-old, but the other six went under and never resurfaced, the paper says. The teens had only one life vest among them.
The rescued teenager was treated and released.
Marilyn Robinson, a friend of the families, watched helplessly as the victims, five males and one female, went under. She said a large group of family and friends, including roughly 20 children, were out at the sandbar to barbecue, swim and have a good time.
They frequent the area and were familiar with the water, Robinson said.
"None of us could swim," the 38-year-old said. "They were yelling 'help me, help me. Somebody please help me.' It was nothing I could do but watch them drown one by one."

If this was a known problem, why was'nt something done about it, like putting a chicken wire cage over the hole? Now thats rocket science is it not? God you Americans can be so stupid at times!

This isnt about bashing Americans. The point is these children are gone.....never to see there families...to have all the wonderful AMERICAN holidays with there families. Lets pray for the families and for all those kids this will effect.

you can not put chicken wire to cover up a sink hole in a sand bed. the river bed is constantly changing due to the strong current. the kids did not purposely go out into deep waters- they just hit a random drop off as they were standing in water that was only to their hips. so, why dont you get all the facts of this situation before you start calling people stupid.
