The Significance Of Romney's Big Bird Comment

Romney gave a carefully choreographed performance at the October 3rd debate, but when he went off script to address the moderator about extending his time speaking, he ended up declaring his intent to defund public broadcasting, the moderator's employer, and he acknowledged that the moderator, Jim Lehrer, and Big Bird would be affected, then he attempted to cover it with a disingenuous declaration, “I like PBS, I love Big Bird. I actually like you too.” But his word love fest couldn't obscure the harsh words, “I’m sorry Jim, I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS,” that revealed how easy it is for him to take away anything that benefits ordinary people.

The Debate brought home the fact that Romney can't be on his own for a minute without putting his foot in his mouth, and I would venture a guess that the rumored involvement of Romney's family in the campaign is the reason he won't be participating in Nickelodeon’s “Kids Pick the President” special, which is a presidential campaign tradition, because the kids get to ask questions.  They're calling the Romney family intervention, "let Mitt be Mitt, but they should call it don't let Mitt speak without a script . . .

When speaking his mind, Romney not only revealed that he plans to defund Big Bird, he also told the Palestinians that their culture is inferior to Jewish Culture; he insulted the British by expressing doubts about their ability to fulfill their responsibilities to the Olympics; He told students to ask their parents for a loan to attend college, or to start a business; He told a woman who lost her home to a natural disaster, to go home and call 911; He didn't know the day his wife's horse would be participating in the Olympics and did not plan to attend; And he challenged the quality of cookies he was offered at a political gathering.  And he's not even a public figure yet . . .

Romney is a man who has repeatedly demonstrated that he lacks discretion, and discernment, in human matters, and that is probably why he intends to establish a massive military budget — if you can't get along with people, military might will empower you to control them — by force.
