ALBUQUERQUE  - It now appears the little boy mauled in the Sandia Mountains on Saturday was attacked by a mountain lion although game officers still aren't totally sure.

Officers from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish investigators said they are now 90 percent sure that a mountain lion pounced on Jose Salazar Jr., 5, and was trying to drag him away as the boy's father gave chase.

That little boy remains in the hospital recovering from head and neck wounds while the search for the animal continues.  He is expected to be in the hospital for another night.

Animal attacks like this are rare, and experts said they generally happen when an animal is hungry.  They also said the boy's size made him an easy target.

Game officers today continued to search for the animal behind the attack and left behind more traps.  They also said they found more prints around the area of the attack off the Balsam Trail.
