"The blast has ripped apart many vehicles. It went with a bang. There are reports of casualties," said local police officer Mohammad Imran.

"We have received a call about a blast in Rawalpindi's Choorh Chowk area and sent ambulances," a rescue official said.

Pakistan's powerful military is headquartered in Rawalpindi, a huge, sprawling city neigbouring Islamabad.

That seemed like a powerful blast for causing this sort of damage.
