Skateboarding in the usa, What is so wrong with it?
Why are children, teens and adults harrassed because they try to skate a ledge, rail or stairs, ill tell you why because America is a sue happy country and they fear being sued for someone hurting themselves. I can assure you in a skateboarders eyes this is not the case. Many kids who skateboard are trying to get away from daily problems and situations in their lives that are causing them stress, some just because the thrill of jumping a ledge is emense.
In America i have seen how illegal it is to skate and the abuse some teens and people face for trying to skate a good area. Penaltys include tresspassing charges, tickets and in some cases jail.
I don't understand why security guards find the need to scream in peoples faces and resort to violence just to ask someone to move off or away from the area. Where is the respect to our younger generation. If elders expect respect then it has to be shown both ways or they are creating a recipe for disaster.
Let me put it to you like this, would you rather your child be on a skateboard where he or she is getting exercise or running around in a street gang because they are bored?
The government from what i have seen offer no extra activities or safe places for our children to go. Does it take an genius to work out if they had somewhere to go and something to do like skateboarding or other activities then the gang and crime rates may possibly go down?
Why Do cops insist on putting fear out there than trying to get to know there community and hassling people who skate. Why aren't they out catching drug dealers and people who commit real crimes?
SKATEBOARDING is NOT a crime so make it LEGAL.

It's actually illegal? I've never heard of this.
at 17:41 on March 17th, 2009
yes it is. The next time you look at a ledge look at how many skate stops are on it.
They are teaching people who build how to make walls anti- skate. I think its horrendous.

Are the reasons behind this legislation due to public safety or abuses encountered in the past? Maybe you have to conceder the over all safety of the public and ask for designated areas. After all we do not play Tennis on the main avenue down town either.

I understand legal aspects........ However Why is it so illegal. If they aren't smoking crack then why is it such a problem.

I do not know the details of this legislation and the reasons behind it, why I can not make a judgement on it.
Maybe past event have lead to those laws and it may be interesting to dig up the minutes preceding the implementation of this law in order to understand hits existence.
All those things are publicly available through City Hall.

What is needed is a system like you Brits have where if you sue and lose, you pay the legal bills of the person you sued.
That ends the bullmerde suits, and would cut out a lot of this stuff.

I do agree with you there. i think because i was brought up in a city where skateboarding is encouraged so it all seems so different to me. But i dont think it should be illegal?

Private property is private.
I believe that we should build a whole lot of skateparks.
Hey, I skateboarded in 1965 and '66. We had a plastic type wheel, not as good as today, but we didn't have the "new" design with the back raised to put the board in the air.
When I re-incarnate, I will re-incarnate someplace that has skateboarding. :)

Well first off let me start by saying in a broad broad sense you are right, but the things you are saying actually just shows me how young and inexperienced you really are. To tell me that I should let skaters skate on my property because if I don't then they will just resort to gangs/crime is completely assnine. Most of the skater community, young and old, that I have known, are already into drugs, and do nothing really except travel around destroying everything they come across without a care in the world. As far as finding things for our younger folks to do, there are tons of outdoor activities to do no matter where you live. Sports fields are abundent, leagues to join and play in, etc. The problem really lies within the skate population. In every sport there is some definate bad eggs that ruin it for everyone. Me being a business owner, I personally do not want the "bad egg" skater kids trashing my building, leaving their cigarette butts all over the place, beer cans, joint roaches, etc just so I can come and spend my weekends picking it all up. So what do I do? Hire security guards to keep it from happening. I don't care if they are good people. Bottom line it's an expense for my business that shouldn't even be there. Just because they, or their parents are to stupid to find stuff to do doesn't mean me has a buisness owner has to cover the bill with the constant cleaning/repairs. If someone comes on to private property and expects not to get tased or tackled then they are just retarded. The signs are there for a reason.
I do however, despite how the above sounds, do agree with you. I actually have donated towards a skate/surf shop here in my city. They are in the process of building a skate park, that I think, is where skating should be done, and not on my property.

First of all, please do not take my article as me begging you to let skaters Skate on your property. That is not what i am saying at all. as for me being young and inexperienced, why personal attacks? That just proves immaturity on your part. i care about our younger generation and im sorry that old people cant. and no not all skaters do drugs and trash peoples property. explain to me why i know law enforcement that skate? does that make them drug smoking, beer guzzling hooligans? Not at all. I know good people who skate and people who have ambitions.
The point i was making is Why is it so illegal to put a skateboard on the ground and skate a street, then get harrassed or beaten to the ground, its not really fair is it?
Im sure if your child was playing soccer and a ball went through a window you would say "its only soccer".
Well this is only skating and i think people need to realise that the younger generation Do have a voice and they wont stop until they are heard.
Im Not asking you to pay for damages to your building or allow skaters in your "precious property". I just dont see why the government doesnt help kids like these and build places for them to go, so people like you dont get bothered, and kids dont get linched everytime they try to skate somewhere.

Look, if a person is skateboarding on clearly marked private property and gets told to leave and don't then they are going to get detained bottom line. It has nothing to do with skateboarding. They could be fishing, or just walking around. Unfortunately some law enforcement takes this verbal warning to extremes which is quite an embarrasment to be honest.
I never said all skaters do drugs and cause problems. I said there are "bad eggs" that ruin it for all other skaters. Also if my kids were playing soccer and happen to kick the ball through the neighbors window, then I would reluctently offer to pay for the window. When skaters trash 500-1000 dollars worth of ledging and stair rails, which believe me is being generous on the dollar amount, would offer to pay for it then I wouldn't care at all if they were there after business hours.
I realize you are not asking me to pay for damages to my buildings, but that is exactly what happens when sports, like skateboarding, are not controlled.
Furthermore, and I promise this will be all lol, I did a little research on the actual law and statutes of skateboarding in your area that you have on your profile above. I couldn't actually find anything saying skateboarding was illegal besides on private property. I will look into it more just to get the specifics for my area because you have me very intrigued now. Again I will say that I agree with you and that kids, teens, and adults should be able to skate anywhere they want as long as it's not on clearly marked private property.

Where is this guys building?! I would kill to break out the generator and get some good photos skating his rails, doing drugs on the steps, smoking ciggs, and being a general bad egg.
All sarcasm asside I welcome the security, they are easy enough to pay off, bribe, or just plain ignore. The skatestoppers however are what do the damage, not our boards. the paint on your rails damages anyway due to the disgusting oily hands sliding up and down it all day, the skatestoppers create the damage because when I roll up @ 2 am and pry those bad boys off with a drill and crowbar it can cause a bit of...chunking. Skateboarding is a 5.5 billion dollar a year industry as of 2008. were not going anywhere and we will not be pigeon-holed into skating at a regulated, pad enforced, 8 dollars per couple hours, overcrowded with soccer moms skatepark. the streets have been and will continue to be ours, whether you want to accept and embrace it, or continue to loathe it, it doesnt matter.
Now excuse me while i go smoke crack, shoot some heroin, snort a line, and recklessly destroy property "without a care in the world".

Sitting here tuggin on my bong and trying educate myself on social psychology and diversity it is apparent that none of you actually skate, or if you do your just the poser wanna be weekend warrior. And alan is obviously the store owner that instead of trying to encourage our buisness chooses to sit around with a corn cob up his keister and needs something to go home and bitch about to his wife so she has something to address at the next town meeting.
I'm truley amazed at this world we live in. It's completely acceptable for politicians and officials to swindle large amounts of money from the tax payers pockets that elected them to that position, but does anyone ever bitch about their drug habits? Does anyone ever make mention of their use of prostitutes and cocain?
In defense of my brothers and sisters around the world I say this......
Of all the outdoor sports , if thats what people call them these days, skating is by far the most productive. Lets reflect for a moment on surfing. Surfers sit in the water for hours waiting to catch that totaly awesome wave. Do you ever see any of them get out of the water to use the restroom? That same beach where there are hundreds of vacationers with their children frolicking in the surf. Surf that is laced with human waste. Thanks alot for the mouth full of salty piss water, you drug using naturist idot, not only will we save the whales we are going to piss on them.Lets not forget about feeding the local shark population and disrupting the local beach fishermen who actually eat the fish you just pissed on.
On to Rock Climbing, here we have a bunch naturist idiots that jack themselves up on dietary supplements and scream about me smoking a fucking cigarette while the nation plums almost 7 billion cubic gallons of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere and creates acid rain that kills crops and infects drinking water in below groud aquifers. Sorry I got side tracked, they travel out to these pristine areas filled with natural wildlife and climb a rock, for fun they say. Have you ever seen a rock climber stop his 12 hour up hill battle to piss in a bottle that he then carts back home and disposes of properley? Nay, nay i say, there is a bigger purpose here, they climb that rock for the explicit purpose to be able to say, I pissed on Mt. Everest. Let me mess up this pristine enviroment for no reason at all, i say " go the fuck home, climb on your roof and start protesting the destruction of our atmosphere"
to be continued....

hahahaha! Fourplay77 That was an interesting outlook on your thoughts, thank you. lol

Skaters contribute to economic growth and protect pristine enviroments at the same time.
Scratched hand rails need to be repainted, some one just got a job. Broken concrete , another job. The places I skate actually cater to me and my friends by placing large barrles for trash and some even have installed drinking fountains and security to fend off the retarded idiots there to cause trouble. Granted we smoke some weed but we are never soooo stoned that we would trespass onto private property. Those guys are looking for trouble and they found it. They deserve a beating with a stick. If some store owner gets pissed we just find some place else to skate, thats the way of the street. Where this nazi nation is that Samantha speaks of exists I don't know. damnit i have to go but will finish later, my weed man is calling...

fourplay77 just made me laugh my ass off. so true, however in killercali where samantha and I's industry friends are they deal with tickets, security, jhonny law, and anti skate nazi locals on the regular. Hence why the popularity of TF's and private parks such as GIRL, BLACK BOX, and a the ETNIES parks are blowing up right now. because its just plain easier than to deal with tickets, hassle, and being on a hasty timeline to get your footage before you get kicked out or ticketed. it also accounts for the creation of THEBERRICS.COM and why it is so popular. 40 million hits a day is nothing to scoff at.
and I still wanna skate that complainer's business.

ya in my town in nj skateboarding is becoming mainstream. this spring ive started to see many new skaters that just started and now i see these plastic suxion thingies that are made to stop skaters whenever they go onto a side walk. and since there are a good amount of experienced skaters in my town they have gaurd rails in places where people would usually skate and its starting to kill skateboarding here, i have to go to another town every weekend to have a decent day just skateboarding. and with the economic crisis why would the town be spending money on stopping a sport that alot of people mainly teenagers love instead of worrying on real problems. i don't get it i hope it stops soon or next year when my parents ask me where i might want to move i might ask to move to another town where skateboarding isnt considered a crime.
