The State Foundation Day of Hungary (We call it St. Stephen Day – He was our first king and the state founder) National Holiday.

21/08/09

The President of the Hungarian Republic (Laszlo Solyom) wanted to visit Slovakia to inaugurate a St. Stephen statue in town, where mostly Hungarian minority lives.

When he arrived to the border, there were a diplomat who gave an announcement of the Slovakian Prime Minister (Robert Fico, social democrat he says, but how (?) if he in a coalition with the Slovakian National Party – leader Ian Slota) to President Laszlo Solyom.

Robert Fico marked the president as “persona non grata” in Slovakia for all day, so the Hungarian President cannot step across to inaugurate the statue..

The Slovakian Secretary of State says Hungary didn't inform in time the Ministry about the visit.

Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says they informed Slovakia two month earlier about the presidential visit.

Slovakia says the problem was simple: 21 of august is the day of remembrance in Slovakia (Soviet troops cross the borders of Slovakia on this day.)

But..

Last year the president was in Slovakia in the same time, and there wasn't any conflict.

We have something in the EU called: “Europe without borders”.

The Commission says this is just a conflict between the two countries.

The prime ministers going to meet on this Thursday on the border.

Note: it's not a normal behaviour between two EU member states ..

To be continued …

PS: Read this article about how millions of Hungarians got abroad after WWI.
