Update: December 5, 2008: 124 photos from across the globe have been added to this story and you are welcome to join this global club of hope. The geographical localities that I have been able to count are as follows: Thailand, Baharin, South Africa, Japan, USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, Argentina, Qatar, India, Brazil, Indonesia,Philippines, Albania, Pakistan, Mexico, Ireland, Botawana, Tanzania Chile and New Zealand.

Original Story:

It seemed like a normal (??) day at work in Mumbai and a regular evening till a colleague of mine discovered this smiling moon.

It seems that the moon aided by the two planets are trying to give a message of hope and assuaging the injuries that the entire population of this bruised city suffered in the last few days.

So I clicked this smiling moon of hope.

If someone has a better snap please upload it and share it with the entire world. If you are in Mumbai get out and have a look at the sky, I think this is not going to last for long...

Just read on Now Public that it is being sighted in Australia..

We are calling up friends and sharing this and everyone is just shouting and screaming, no one has seen such a beautiful FACE of the moon before....

Finally some smiling faces in Mumbai!!

The moon has called it a night in Mumbai and rest of India but it will be there again tomorrow. Applicable to other parts of the world. The best formation was today but tomorrow it will be there again, watch out and smile.

December 2: 2008 India: Now this is what I call a truly Global Family! People from Thailand, Baharin, South Africa, Japan, USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, Argentina, Qatar, Indonesia,Philippines, Albania, Pakistan, Mexico, Ireland, Botawana, Tanzania Chile and New Zealand have contributed some awesome pictures and am sure our friends from Canada will add some more experiences. Thanks all for the contribution, will try and add some more photos tonight. Keep adding and smiling!

Its 21:31 PM and the event is about to occur again in India.

December 1st, 2008 – Venus, Jupiter and Moon form "smiley face"
In the last week in November and the first week of December 2008, the two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, will be close together in the evening sky, forming a spectacular double. The two are closest together on Monday December 1st, with Venus lying about 2 degrees to the South (left) of Jupiter. On the same night the Crescent Moon will appear just beneath them, forming a "Smiley Face".

I took the liberty of adding your story to my Digg bookmarks to share it with others on the web, I hope that is OK.  It is just such a beautiful way of thinking of this event.  As a Christian I can't help but think about how our entire faith centered around another celestial event casting light on a human event (Christ's birth and the star of Bethlehem).  This story reminds me of that and it is such a lovely sentiment from the Heavens to the people of Mumbai and India, and the world.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

I loved the sight of the planets just before it became a smiley.  It's as if God is smiling on his people on the globe.

Aw that is sad!! I didn't realize that was happening in some parts of the world.  Do you have any pictures you could add to this story?

Sure.  It might be visible from Alaska with some extra work since all that is low on the horizon, but it would have looked the same everywhere you can see it.  Even Mumbai has a smiley face.

I have added your pics and Blog post on my post here..

I thought It was only me who had seen such a beautiful event. Again thinking it was normal enough  but I may have seen first time. However when searching for the word Smiling moon I found many others including you having described the beautiful event.

Hopefully will get a chance to see this tonight in Vancouver!  This won't happen again until the year 2052:

Stargazers will have to wait more than 40 years for the spectacle to happen again. Jupiter, Venus, and the moon won’t get this close together again until November 2052. However, in March 2012, the two planets will meet again in another bright display.

I'm an amateur astronomer and photographer in Adelaide Australia. I heard/read that there would be a close conjunction of the Moon with two planets, Venus and Jupiter, in the evening of 1 December 2008. So I captured the scene with my Panasonic TZ15 point and shoot digital camera.  In some of my photos, you can see the "Earth-shine", Sunlight reflected off the Earth, on the part of the Moon that is in shadow.
