Gasp puff, ahhhhh puff… Yes! I smoke and I have always been careful that my smoke does not bother anyone.  I am all for clean air and really like the fact that smoking has been banned in many public places through out the world.

I only smoke where its legal and then with care not to offend anyone, I of course smoke in my house and in the garden. My lungs are pretty clear as I do not take much smoke down its basically a mouth only event with me.  That has made sure my lungs are not full of tar and smoking does not seeming effect my health and at 63 (I have x-rays to prove it).  I am still able to a run fast 100 meters or 5 miles without losing too much breath.

But my beef is not one born out of being a smoker but that concerning the lefty non smoking brigade that are issuing loads of propaganda. About how, no smoking ban in public is decreasing the heart attack rate around the globe.  The claim by 10% by the British authorities, that’s being said due to less passive smoking.

The fact is there is more awareness and more people exercising, and more people packing up smoking and eating greasy fast foods especially in United Kingdom.  I really prefer the truth yes banning smoking in public places makes it nicer for everybody. But know lets start banning the really problem that is 100 times deadly than passive smoking and that those damn fumes from today’s transport.  Most of those from the no smokers lobby are in fact helping to pollute our air and just as bad as the smokers fouling up this planets atmosphere with the foulness of their gas guzzling auto’s.

Now the lefty governments are going full tilt at saying the laws they created to stop smoking are wonderful. Well yes great, so now let’s see some real action concerning banning all pollution as they are not doing so much about that.

Of course packing up this smoking habit of mine is completely up to me and not up to any doctor, nor government. It’s better than getting a fix on a hard drug.

I agree that is BS about the passive smoking crap. But, what you do see is that a great number of pubs have closed in the UK - more people now drink at home - AND the fact that less people are going to pubs, less duty is being paid so the sodding UK government is going to increase taxes on canned beer taken home - all for the good the public, of course.

But - and as a smoker myself - I will ask, for the 14 billionth time "If this is true - why not ban tobacco products all together?"

*Whispers* the reason is that with taxes and duty on sales there is a surplus of 3 billion pounds into the government coffers.

In fact the UK government make a lot of money out of UK citizens bad habits.  That's one of the reasons I escaped here in the Philippines  its only 16 pence a pack and 26 pence for a bottle of beer. The down side is the Filipino's are great at polluting the air, too many motor bikes and to much fossil fuel is burned to cook meals.

I don't use aircon because I know the power stations burn oil and coal.

If you had a few pages I could regale you on all the crap we breathe in the environment, far more damaging than passive smoke, everything from asbestos, mercury and Radon, then the sky is the limit, do not even get me started on all the Fecal bio aerosols you inhale when sitting on the can going for a dump and 20x that when in a public bathroom, granted there is exhaust, but it is above your head, guess where your mouth and nose is Sherlock! HA!

Great story Babel

As long as cigarettes are legal to sell people should be free to smoke.

didn't Bill Clinton also claim he "never inhaled?" Japan is becoming an anti smoking country. It's illegal to smoke on many city streets and although in restaurants and cafes there were always no smoking areas, many of them are becoming total non smoking. Taxi's too, and Japan Railway (JR) has removing smoking from many of its stations.I suppose, the butt end is that times are changing!

[q url="news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8267523.stm"] Smoking bans 'cut heart attacks' Bans on smoking in public places have had a bigger impact on preventing heart attacks than ever expected, data shows. Smoking bans cut the number of heart attacks in Europe and North America by up to a third, two studies report. This "heart gain" is far greater than both originally anticipated and the 10% figure recently quoted by England's Department of Health. The studies appear in two leading journals - Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Heart attacks in the UK alone affect an estimated 275,000 people and kill 146,000 each year. [/q]

Hi All,

Well the goverment/s make a lot money from people who smoke, but now especially the uk the goverment as to spent a lot of money to help people who have health problems due to smoking. Maybe, thats why the are trying to ban it from public!

Any way i read some good stop smoking benefits which i am sure will help someone to stop smoking.
